Shadow Catcher

Could somebody tell me what type of lights work for shadow catchers in Iray? I can use distant lights with the matte function easily, shadows come out very sharp. Spot lights and point lights do not seem to cast shadows when using the matte function. Is there anyway to capture only a figure and its shadow in Iray using spotlights?
