Looking to upgrade my ram, have a question

so my laptop has 12GB DDR3L memory, and my wife bought me 16GB DDR3 memory for Easter. Can I use the DDR3 sticks or do I have to use the DDR3L. I know the "L" is better in that it doesn't produce as much heat and works quicker, but since I have 16GB not being used, i'd like to use them. So does anyone know if I can? And yes, my laptop can go up to 16GB.

Thank you.

What is the voltage rating on your new RAM? Often, SODIMs that will work fine as low voltage don't have the "L" because they can be used as non DDR3l RAM (multiple voyage ratings). RAM that has a 1.35V rating should be DDR3l compliant. More info can be found here:

PS: I have RAM running in my Laptop as DDR3l that doesn't have the "L", but it is rated for 1.35V.

Thank you for the response. I haven't opened it yet, in case I need to take it back, but I think it's a 1.5v.
