Installing 3rd Party Content

edited December 1969 in New Users

Hey,

How do I install third party content? As in content not bought from the store and handled by the install manager?

I've only found information for older daz studios. I'm running 4.7.

Thanks!

xx

My 'my library' folder withint my documents -> Daz -> Studio -> My Library ...
Is empty bar for an empty 'scenes' folder.

Are you sure this is the correct place for manual content placement using 4.7?

The old folder name for DAZ Studio before DIM, was 'My Library'

DIM by default, installs to C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library and that is where you should install your content, treat it the same as you would My Library.

Some users like to keep the two separate, other content and DAZ 3D content, but there is no reason that you can't keep them all together.

If you are on a PC, it is just a matter of 'merging' the folders in My DAZ 3D Library with the ones from the ZIP file of the same name.

We keep them separate because thats what DAZ Themselves have said to do repeatedly. There were several posts about DIM installed content not playing nice with manually installed content and causing crashes, especially if you use content service. Its really not that hard make a new folder and add another path to the directory.

It depends on what the content consists of?

For example, Morphs for Genesis or Genesis 2, MUST be installed into the same folder as the Base figures

I watched your video and followed the instructions exactly and I still can't see any 3rd party content. I guess I can try the "separate folder" technique next. Can someone please give me some starter tips on mapping to a new folder? How do I do that for 3rd party content. Thank you.

The most important thing, whether you add it to an existing content folder or create a new one, is that the Data and Runtime folders are directly beneath the folder you have designated as a content folder.  For example, My DAZ 3D Library/Runtime, not My DAZ 3D Library/Content/Runtime.

Sorry to breathe life into such an old post, but I just HAD to say thank you, thank you, thank you!! I was going crazy trying to figure out why I could not get the textures/materials for 3rd party content to work instead of them just coming out as just a gray box and your comment solved it!! Big kudos to you Fixmypcmike!!

  • Also sorry to bring this thread back, but I've followed every single step here and none of my 3rd party content is showing anywhere in DAZ.  Anyone have any other suggestions?

  • I have exactly the same problem. Working on 4.10 with DIM.

No problem to install content from the DAZ3D website shop with the DAZ Install software (DIM).

If I want to add third part things by simply copy paste them in the right folder, it simply does not work. I tried all the combination possibles.

All files related to DAZ are isolated in a separate SSD drive and I used robocopy / mklink to do so. The DAZ works perfectly like that with all add-ons bought directly from the website in.

So, I guess that, in order to appear in DAZ 4.10, add-ons should be first registered in the database and that is what is doing the DIM.

Of course, I checked the settings of the DIM carefully (as I moved some directories, it was unavoidable).

So, I imagined to put zip files in the folder where the DIM downloads them and to use the DIM... But they do not appear anyway. Maybe it is needed to write a .dsx file in xml syntax to tell the DIM where to put content ?

What is strange is that I can apply a .duf directly in an object with the mouse by holding it from its directory till the DAZ.

Am I alone in that case ? Has someone a clue for that ? Should I use an earlier version of DAZ ?

I finally found the solution. And I am feeling very stupid to confess that it is my lack of knowledge about DAZ which is the cause of the hours I spent to make things working properly.

    Different conclusions from this experience:

Yes, you can run DAZ3D on a separate drive (my installation is of about 130 GB, it is a lot of space on a 512 GB SSD). [Use robocopy "origin" "destination" /sec /e /move and make a link with mlink "origine"  "destination" /J in the Windows CMD started as administrtor. Out of topic but good to know. I did it for all directories likend to DAZ.]

Yes, you can add third parts in a dedicated folder in order not to mix everything. In this case the procedure to do is to create a new folder, open DAZ and go on Edit --> Preference --> Content : click ob Content Directory Manager and add the newly created folder.

Yes, you can simply copy-paste all third parts in the right directory, for example the newly created one. Runtime has to be directly on step below the root directory. Usually, creators put files in sub directories included in the ZIP files. Some have also written scripts to do the job! Copy-paste data --> data, Runtime --> Runtime, etc.

And finally : Yes, the database ignores that you have installed these files in a specific folder... Open DAZ, click on Windows --> Panes (tabs) --> Content Library. Follow the tree until you find the files you have installed and simply add a Category to it. They will appear in the right category afterwards. If the category does not exist, it is the place to create ones. It also there that the mess created sometimes by the DIM (oh yes... a lot of "Lost and Found") can be reorganized.

I just downloaded the Winterbrose .PP2 Exporter script updated for DAZ Studio 4.10+ (available in the Renderosity Freebies section).

It comes with instructions for its use, but I have to admit that I do not know how to install scripts to DAZ Studio. Those instructions are not in the package.

With all the modeling I do, making them available to Poser users as well as DAZ Studio users would of course be a good thing. The .PP2 format is compatible with both, which is what I want my models to be.

At the risk of sounding dumb, could someone that uses DAZ Studio please provide instructions on how to install scripts? I would appreciate it. Links to tutorials would do nicely.

    Thanks in advance.

Put the script somewhere in <content directory>/Scripts, in DS use the Content Library to go to Daz Studio Formats/<content directory>/Scripts/whatever, and double-click the script (or right-click>Create Custom Action to put it on the Scripts menu for quick access).

Hi all, does work the same for 4.15. I still haven't got the hang of how to make scripts work..

I guess the worst of this I have asked for help before, I'm hoping the above works.

  • Yes, scripts can be loaded just like content so just place it in a mapped directory
