Daz immediately quits on launch. Running Mac OS Monterey

I am using DazStudio 4.12. I recently upgraded my Mac to Monterey. Today was the first time I tried using Daz again and everytime I try to open it, it immedeatly quits on me. I tried uninstalling and then reinstallin in Daz Central, but that didn' seem to work either. Then I tried to manually uninstalling from the DAZ3DIM1 Folder's Uninstallers - didn't work either.

How do I get Daz to work again?

You need to update to the latest version of Studio for it to work on macOS Monerey,  Also use DIM (Daz Install Manager) & not Daz Central

  • That is what i am trying to do. I tried uninstalling everyting, but the 4.12. Version of Daz would not uninstall. I downloaded a fresh Daz Central and tried installing 4.15 through Daz Central, but it won't fully install Daz Studio. When I clicke on the green "Install" button  the installation seems to be stuck at 36%

DazCentral sometimes has problems with the latest versions of MacOS, try using DIM instead.

  • I am trying to do that now. I don't know what is happening but  the install of Daz Studio 4.20 seems to fail. I still have my old version 4.12 installed, which I don't know how to uninstall as it doesn't come with an uninstaller.

I attempted to download everything through DIM. When I click on "Ready to Install" DAZ Studio 4.20 the install comes back as "Install Failed". Under the Install tab DAZ Studio 4.20 is listed, but without a check mark.

This is so frustrating! I really need to get back to work and I don't want to have to downgrade my Mac again.

  • When I try to uninstall DAZ Studio 4.2 through the Install Manager that doesnt work either. I just get a strange code in the search bar: pkg::rx::^(13176-4|13176-42|42071-2|42071-1|13305-1)$

  • That is the filter code to show only the Daz Studio parts . Clear the filter field and you should see everything, though that doesn't explain the issues you are having.

  • How do I uninstall my old Daz Studio? And how can I figure out what issue I am having? I really need DAZ Studio back ASAP!

    Please Help!

  • How did you initially install?

  • Since you are a Mac user (sorry, I missed that) check the permissions for DIMHelper in Security and Privacy Settings

  • I started out with DIM when I started using DAZStudio and switched to DAZ Central may be a year or two ago.

Daz Central is essentially a skin for DIM, the installation helper (which handles things needing elevated privileges) is the same for both.

You need to check ther permissions as I said - I'm not familiar with Macs but presumably DIMHelper needs to eb able to write application code and data.

  • I don't know how to check permissions on my Mac. Could somebody please explain how to?

  • @AnneWertheim If you want to check the file Permissions on Mac..

    For Daz Install Helper…
    Go to: Applications—>DAZ 3D—>DAZStudio 64-bit—>DzInstallHelper

    For Daz Install Manager (DIM)...
    Go to: Applications—>DAZ 3D—>DAZ3DIM1 64-bit—>DAZ3DIM.app

Rt-Click on the file (app name) and select: Get Info

Scroll down to the bottom of the info box and open the twirly arrow for: Sharing & Permissions

For DzInstallHelper you will see your Mac Username listed under Name and the permissions listed under Privilege. It should say: Read & Write
If not, you can click on the permission to change it.

For DIM, the permissions should automatically be set to:
Under Name: system and under Privilege: Read & Write
Under Nam: admin and under Privilege: Read only

NOTE: For most files, you can click on the Privilege to change it, but not for DIM

On Mac, in the folder: DAZ3DIM1 64-bit—>Uninstallers you will find a file called: Remove-DAZ3DIM1.app to uninstall DIM. Hope that helps.

Goto System Prefences - Security & Privacy,  Click on the Privacy headding & make sure the DAZ3DIM.app have Full Disk Access.

If it isn't there then click on the little padlock icon,  enter your password, click on the + icon add manually add it.

  • I am at a total loss! I really need DAZ Studio back and running. I've done everything that was suggested. To clarify things, I am attaching a few screenshots of the granted permissions.

At this point, I'd be happy to pay someone who is familiar with Macs running DAZ on Monterey to take a look at my set up and help me figure out how to get DAZ up and running again.

  • @AnneWertheim It looks like you have the app permissions set correctly, so the problem most likley occurs elsewhere.

The Daz Install Manager (DIM), says it could not read the files. so I think it may be one of these 3 things...

    1. The folder where DIM downloads the files does not have the correct permissions (to Read) the file.

    2. The downloaded files are corrupted.

    3. The DIM manifest files are messed-up.  According to Daz:

The Install Manifest is the file that is created for each package that is installed by Install Manager, in the “Manifest Archive” folder that is specified in the application settings. within the package and provides information used by Install Manager to perform the installation.
    Source: http://wiki.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/install_manager/referenceguide/tech_articles/install_manifest/start

You may need to delete the downloaded files and/or manifest files and try again. Check the gear icon in the top-right corner of DIM an go to Advanced settings to find your file Downloads folder location (to check folder permissions) and the manifest file location.  Post screenshots of your Advanced tab settings, if you have any questions, or if you think something might be out of order.

  • @robertswww  Thank you for your help! I did what you suggested and deleted the files inside the Downloads Folder as well as the ManifestFiles Folder inside the InstallManager Folder. This time DIM downloaded and installed the files without giving me an error message. Unfortunately, when I tried to open the freshly downloaded DAZStudio 4.20.0.2,it quit on me before ever opening, just like my old version wouldn't open since I upgraded my Mac OS to Monterey.

I am wondering if I have the download and intallation path set wrong? My outdated version of DAZ 3D resides in my main Application folder on my hard drive. The installation path in DIM is set to:

    /Volumes/Work HD/02.Poser_Files/Applications

and Downloads is set to: /Volumes/Work HD/02.Poser_Files/Applications/Data/DAZ 3D/InstallManager/Downloads

  • @AnneWertheim I looked over your DIM screenshots, and here are a couple of things on the DIM Installation tab that caught my eye, and might need adjusting...

    The DB:
The Daz database folder is typically stored under: /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/DAZ 3D/cms
I noticed that you have both moved and renamed your database from: cms  to: Content Database
When you first launch Daz, the default DB location is stored in the Daz-->Prefs and CMS Settings tab (under Cluster Directory). Daz needs to connect to that. I think that if you are going to change both the DB file location and name, that it should be done in Daz Studio first, and then go back and select Work Offline in DIM and change the DB settings there. So you may need to reset DIM to the original default DB location and name settings until you get Daz Studio running.  Maybe @Richard Haseltine can confirm if this is a DB connection issue, or if he notices anything else off in your DIM settings, and provide additonal tips.

    Content Paths:
I see you removed the original default content path and installed 2 custom paths that look like they are on the same external drive. I am certain that I read somewhere on these forums that the Daz Studio app should be installed on your main system drive (the one with the OS), but Daz content install just fine on an external drive. I believe the default install location on a Mac is: /Users/Shared/My DAZ 3D Library

I would try the database name/location adjustment first. If that does not clear up the problem, uninstall Daz Studio and reinstall again, but in the default location and with all the default settings to see if that works. If it does, you can then add a custom location for your content to be stored on an external drive.

  • Finally I had some success!!!! :-) As per your suggestion @robertswww I changed the install location and was able to install DAZ Studio and open it. I was surprised that I had to put it in that location, because my previous DAZSTudio was installed in the Applications Folder on my Harddrive. I am not complaining - I am super relieved that I've got DAZ back. Now, how do I delete the old version of DAZStudio. There is no Uninstaller located inside its folder.

Would you mind looking over my set up one more time and let me know if everything looks right?

I really appreciated the help and hope I can go back to using DAZ again.

  • @AnneWertheim That is really good news!

To uninstall Daz Studio, normally, you would select the checkbox for Daz Studio in the Daz Install Manager (DIM) and then click the Uninstall button.  Since you already changed your DIM settings, you would have to revert your DIM settings back to your previous settings, and then DIM should be able to find and uninstall Daz.

If you don't want to mess up your revised DIM settings, then just follow the official steps in this Daz Help Center article to Uninstall Daz Studio:
(Note: it's for PC users, so you will need to make adjustments for your Mac file locations)
    https://helpdaz.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360055963392-How-do-I-uninstall-delete-Daz-Studio-

Your new DIM settings look fine, just make sure you set your CMS database location to match within the Daz Studio prefs. Also the Daz Default Resources might need to be installed on your main OS drive along with the Daz Studio app.

So, now that I have Daz Studio running, I don't know how to point the Cluster Directory back to: /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/DAZ 3D/cms   Currently mine does not reside there as you can see from the screenshot. On a Mac, I can't access the Library Folder residing in the Username Folder. The Library folder can only be accessed from the Finder menue under "Go" - "Go to Folder"

But may be I don't have to point it there after all?

Make sure that the DAZ3DIM Helper has Full Disk Access privileges. Note: the helper is not the same as DAZ Install Manager; it's a separate application that's actually buried inside the DAZ Install Manager package. It is used to install certain items, such as DAZ Studio, and if it doesn't have full access rights to wherever your downloads live, then you will get install failures.

To fix this, do the following:

    1. Close DAZ Install Manager.
    2. Open System Preferences.
    3. Click Security & Privacy
    4. Click the Privacy tab
    5. Click Full Disk Access in the list on the left
    6. Look for an entry in the list named something like "com.DAZ.DA...AZ3DIMHelper" or "DAZ3DIMHelper"
    7. If there's a checked checkbox beside it, then the helper has the appropriate privileges, and your problem is something else.
    8. If the entry is there, but the checkbox is unchecked, then click the padlock icon at bottom left, enter your admin password, and check the box.
    9. If there's no entry for DAZ3DIMHelper, then do the following:
    10. Switch to Finder
    11. Go to Applications and find the DAZ3DIM application (probably inside the "DAZ3DIM1 64-bit" folder inside the "DAZ 3D" folder).
    12. Ctrl-click on the DAZ3DIM icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the menu that appears.
    13. In the new window that appears, look inside the Contents folder for a folder called MacOS.
    14. Inside that folder, you'll find an icon that looks like a little screen, labeled DAZ3DIMHelper.
    15. Drag that icon over to the list of applications that have Full Disk Access in your System Preferences window.
    16. Ensure that the checkbox next to it is checked.
    17. When you're done, close System Preferences, re-open DAZ Install Manager, and try again.

@AnneWertheim Right now, both your Daz Studio installation and DIM installation are pointing the database location to: Content Database
I am running an older version of Daz Studio and the database on my rig is pointing to: CMS
I don't know if Daz changed the name and/or location of the database in the new 4.20 release. You could try and load a simple prop from DIM and see if it shows up properly in Daz.  If it does, that DB location should work for you, and if not...

If you want to point the Daz Database back to the original CMS location on Mac, you just need to navigate through the Application Support folder:
The CMS database is located within your username Library folder, which is normally hidden in the Mac finder.
    1.  Click on your Mac username to list the visible files in the Mac finder.
    2.  With that list open, hold down ATL/Option key while you click the Go menu and scroll-down to select the Library folder. It will now be added to your finder list and you will now be able to navigate through the Library folder.
    3.  Navigate to this path:  /Users/username/Library/Application Support/DAZ 3D/cms

Make this change both in the Daz Prefs-->CMS Settings and in the DIM Installation tab under: Content Database Base
