Gotta love vague clients ... Back to the drawing board with a new manga character.

Gotta love vague clients ... All I was given was 'manga style' and some clothing and character descriptions like hair and eye color. I asked for visual examples and received photos of actresses rather than a style of manga and was told the rest was up to me.

So I buy Star 2.0 and bug y'all for a bunch of help and manage these drafts.

After all of that, the client finally shows me the style of manga he's looking for ... "Very nice. Can you make it more serious? Like Attack on Titan manga?"     "More realistic details and proportions."

And shared this image as an example ...

Isn't that more of an Aiko/Hiro style? Naturally, nothing like what I created, lol.

If memory serves, I can do this with V4 and Bodies of Fantasy (no longer available in the store), but is there also a way to use G3 so I can use the same hair and clothes, which he liked?

Do I load V4, apply the BoF morph I want, then transfer that to G3? Or is there already a Star 2.0/G3 morph to give me the desired manga style?

To me, it's more like Kiko/Kota or Kanade/Yuzuru. Also, that's a screenshot from the anime. The manga for Attack on Titan is actually closer to the typical anime/manga style that Aiko and Hiro represent.

That's what I'm thinking, Aiko ... Is there an Aiko dial for G3 or G8? Or do I go back to V4 and build it? I can't back-fit the clothes and hair if I do, can I?

The forum is still acting odd ... mod, can you please delete duplicate posts?

There is an Aiko for G8 that is closer to that look, but sadly no Hiro. Aiko 7 has a counterpart in Kenji 7, though.

For this project, I don't need a male character. So you think between all of the Aiko figures, ranging from V4 to G8, that G8 is the closest to this style?

  • I think Aiko would work for that.

If you happen to know how to use Blender and want it to have the same kind of toon look as this, look up the Lightning Boy Shader. It was like thirty bucks I think and everything is set up for you, it just takes a little bit of time to go through each material of the character and set that to the LB shader. But you can copy it in the shader editor and paste it. It even has a great line feature to give the hand drawn look. I picked it up a couple of weeks ago and haven't had much time to play around with it, but it got me super excited at the anime possibilities!

Aiko for V4? Which Aiko is closest in style? Especially the eyes and nose.

Compare Aiko 7 and Aiko 8 and decide for yourself which most meets your needs. They're pretty similar anyway, so it's more a matter of whether you'd rather work with G3 or G8.

WEll ... since the client already likes the clothing on my G3/Star versions, I guess G3 Aiko will be the easiest switch. Thanks :)

  • I think Kanade or Aiko 7 could work. Also Rera from Crocodile Liu might give you a good start as well.

If you were given photos of actresses then what they probably want is an actual caricature, manga-like style, that looks like the actor. So step 1: Get a DAZ character morphed to look like the actor. step 2: Buy & Apply Cartoonized in the DAZ 3D Store and apply to the result in Step 1.

I think it's worth taking a look at LexaKiness' work over at Renderosity.

I second that. I like their Tahiza character

For males, you'll want the G3M figure Kenji 7.  I'd go with the Aiko 7 (G3F) counterpart, as well.

I hope you got your money up front for the time you're spending on this project. If you're charging by the hour be sure to include the time wasted by the client with their non-specific ideas.

You might als want to check an artist who goes by Muwawya over on Rendo. Has both male and female characters.  Both G3 and G8.

It gets a bit frustrating ... there is a lot of decoding, too. Like a client telling me they are looking for something "fun & whimsical", which of course, means something different to almost EVERYBODY. Just show me the style you have in mind from the git-go ... why is this so hard?

I did get paid in advance, but only enough for what he referred to as 6-hours of work. Naturally, I end up doing much more than that because it's my name on it in my folio ... can't half-a$$ it just because I got roped into a much bigger job than expected.

When this happens, I just look at it as a paid-portfolio piece... Since portfolio pieces are usually done in my free time for no money, at least I got something out of this, like a bunch of new stuff in a new genre/style for in my folio. I'll charge the next guy more, lol.

I wish I made enough from these people to pay all of y'all a little bit. This forum has taught me so much about Daz over the years.

I just discovered that artist the other day and was wondering the same thing. :)

What I've seen some fandom-adjacent commission artists doing lately is charging an extra character design fee for illustrations if the client doesn't have detailed references of the exact character they want, which makes sense since those are two different workflows/skillsets and two review rounds.

A good policy to adopt. I'm sucking it up this time, but good plan for next time.

Hopefully this doesn't muddy the waters further, and do ignore it completely if it does... but have you looked at Sakura 8 and her Sasuke male morph? I mainly thought of them because she's more stylized than the Aiko/Hiro/Kanade/Kenji figures, and because she comes with a bunch of morphs for stylized noses and eyes. I wondered if adding some percentage of Sakura into your model might achieve the look your customer is after.

The reference she was given is almost exactly Aiko, though. If that's what the customer wants, then dialing any Sakura into the character will probably make them far more stylized than they're after.

I do have some of the Sakura products, but not all. Plan to acquire more. However, considering how this guy can be, if Aiko 7 is closest to the sample he shouldn't have given me from the start, that's what I'll try.
