Is there a way to place a primative sphere inside a sphere and make the outer sphere look like a transparent glass ball and the inner sphere look like a glowing ball. Simular to the attached photo. I tried one of the iray glass shaders on the outer sphere but the emmissive ball inside did not show very well.

What glass shader did you use? I'm guessing the outer ball was acting like a solid glass object. You could try turning on the "thin walled" setting in the shader settings of the outer ball.
Thanks Quasar I'll give it a try.........btw it was just a clear glass shader in the Iray shaders folder
Any luck? You could increase the emissive light brightness also. I have changed settings in the Iray render settings to get brighter light as well.
maybe you need a sphere with thickness
you could reverse the normals on a second one inside
