Are Duplicates, as in Edit > Duplicate, instances as the act as are in the sense of when using the Geometry Editor Tool to make new Mat zones on one the rest follow suit.

An instance is a live copy of a scene item - the only things you can change are the top-level transforms (scale, rotate, translate).
A geometry shell is a live copy of a scene item's geometry, but it can have its own surfaces and it can be shrunk or enlarged by a push modifier.
A duplicate is an independent item - if it's a figure you can pose and morph it differently from the original, or repose (or even delete) the original without affecting the duplicate. However the geometry assets are not duplicated, as they aren't if you load a second copy of the same figure from the library - the mesh, UVs, and morphs are loaded only once and used by any item that needs them in the scene. I'm not sure how you could break the link, short of saving as a new asset, if you did want to give two versions of the same item different surfaces or selection groups.
Thanks Richard, so what you are saying my issue is to be expected?
Yes, as I understand it.
Sweet Richard thanks. It just seemed strange and unexpected that it would do that being just a duplicate. But now I know. :)
