"Worst" is not really helpful - are you complaining about the dleiberate changes to Iray on nVidia's behalf, or bugs? At least one (saving layouts) is, we are told, going to be fixed this week. See http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/change_log

    -----------------

Any back up of installers must include the plug-ins as well as the main application.

I have a number of permimitives that have emission settings to allow them to be lit up. None of them work. Not gotten any further to learn anything else wrong yet. I just want my stuff to work. Using perimitives is my main source of lighting in many scenes.

I uninstalled and reinstalled my INVIDIA driver since I saw so many posts saying to install the latest one and I already had the latest one.

    Thanks

I made the mistake of upgrading 4.15 to 4.16 without backing up my 4.15 installer. Promised myself I'd never do it again. They told me then if I hadn't kept a copy of my 4.15 installer I was out of luck.

Probably too late for you now, but next time make a copy of the old installer before you download the new one.

Looks like this 4.20 upgrade is one of the worst DAZ Studio upgrades ever, so I'll hold off until all the issues are resolved. I have made a copy of my 4.16 installer but not allowed to share with you.

Never had an upgrade fail this big. I know to backup the folders next time.

Soon as I set the cutout opacity to 1 it works - Change the setting to make it transparent like it was in 4.16, it no longer lights up.

You can try dividing the luminosity by the cutout opacity, to make it brighter. You can also leave the opacity at 1 and turn off Visible to Primary rays after applying the Create Advanced iray Node Properties Script.

Thank you that is a VERY helpful reminder. I hadn't even considered I'd need to back those up too. You may have just saved me another bout of cursing :-)

Now could you please provide a detailed list and method on this backup? For example, from where to copy which files/folders? and how to step back after upgrade?

If you install through Daz Install Manager, open advanced settings (from the cog at the top-right) and this is where you can see where the files are downloaded to:

(Sorry this is so tiny, I lifted it from the documentation centre for DIM)

I think settings for Daz Central have something similar, but I've never used it so can't say.

ETA: these are the files I'm aware of that you need to backup:

You may not have the DynamicClothingControl not the Decimator if you've never owned those products.

NB: This assumes it's the General Release you want to save the installers for - the Beta filenames are similar but say "PublicBuild" in their filenames. ETA: And the main software installer for the Beta starts IM00012000 not 13176.

If you then install the latest version and decide you want to go back, then for DIM you can simply copy those backed up installers back to where you found them and run DIM to reinstall the older version. I'm sorry but I really don't know how/whether you can do that in Daz Central.

Go to your product library (under account page) and download the installers. Those are the ones you'll need to backup to somewhere safe. As Richard said make sure you include not only DAZ Studio but any plugins too. I don't know how to search for those other than remembering which plugins you have.

If anybody knows how to filter correctly in DIM that might be an easier way.

Note: this works fine if it's the latest  set of installers you want to save, but it's too late now to get the DS4.16.xxx ones from there. So a useful way for the future, but not to go back to pre-DS4.20.xxx

The current "Create Advanced iray Node Properties" Script does not add the option "Visible to Primary rays" (DS 4.2 release).

The script posted here:- https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/548061/iray-ghost-light-fix-dse-for-daz-studio-4-20-o-later/p1 does.

  • Why is there no way to revert back to a previous build? 4.16 worked very well. 4.20 does will not render from my RTX graphix card. It forces me to use the CPU which means I cannot cleanly do other things while the render is happening.

Did 4.20 come out of beta, as it does not work properly.

@MelanieL, @cridgit, thanks for your detailed introduction. However, I tried to do it but seems impossible for me.

@cridgit, your idea, the product library in DAZ website, right now only has 4.20.0.2 avilable for download, no 4.16 anymore (I'm still in 4.16 now, not upgrade)

@MelanieL, your idea is reasonable, unfortunetly, to save PC space, I always checked 'Delete package once installed' in the DIM, so my download folder is always empty, nothing can be copied.

Anyway, I checked the DIM 4.16 installation information, and found all files installed in  disk:/Program Files/DAZ 3D/DAZStudio4/****, this folder is different as the DAZ/My Library  folder which we always installed assets to, so I'm thinking maybe the easiest way is to copy the whole DAZStudio4 folder (this folder is about 1.14GB, includes all plugins) to some where else before upgrade, can this work?

have you updated your GPU driver? Geenrally a new version of iray will increase the minimum driver supported.

I did as you said, and it worked. Thank you.

    Pity abut the deletions!

I'm honestly not sure whether you can just copy that folder and hope to be able to revert to it - maybe Richard or someone else can advise about that?
