Need help with basic 3Delight Rendering - No dome draw, No light from HDR

DiomedeDiomede Posts: 15,221

I began dabbling with Daz Studio after the big shift to IRay.  I don't know the basics of 3Delight, but am aware it used to be the default.  I loaded a G3 figure in Daz Studio, switched the render output to 3Delight, checked the environment to make sure 'Draw Dome' and light from 'Dome and Scene' were both enabled, and clicked render.  When I rendered, not only was there no light from the dome, but the dome was not drawn.

I inserted a spotlight and rendered, and that worked as expected, but how does one use an HDR and draw the dome in 3Delight?

Use a distant light with a yellowish tone as sun light.

Here's a video that covers the differences between Iray and 3DL,so it might help you:

There are other better solutions for global illumination than the ancient UberEnvironment2. Check out IBL-Master, by far the easiest way of utilizing HDRIs. Or you could use the built into 3DL pathtracer, accessable via scripted rendering, for true physically plausible light bouncing/GI. The downside is you need to convert every material to pathtracer compatible shaders...the DS standard shaders won't work.

You may or may not find some useful stuff here;)

Thank you.  I am sure I will find the link most useful.  yes

  • I was going to link you my Sicklorama but just discovered my Box account has been compromised angry

    so deactivated it insteadcrying

I will find the original file on my other computer later and upload it here with a duf scene

basically it is a flattened sphere with a shadowcatcher base that takes 360 renders, the dome does not cast shadows and it is used with a distant light

I made my own shadowcatcher shader so can share all of it

it's my fast /sarcasm way of using 3Delightwink not as fast as Carrara

    Thanks, much appreciated.

I should say that my interest in 3Delight is primarily from watching some videos related to the Linerender utility.  If I understand correctly, the outline feature only works using 3Delight.  The Linerender utility enhances that ability.  I would be happy to be corrected if I am wrong and if Linerender can be used in IRay after one of the updates.

    See for example these threads.

On outlines and 3Delight in general.   https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/415051/scripted-3delight-outline

    On the Linerender product.  https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/116791/linerender9000-commercial/p1

  • yes, I have the Linrender product but I do find it confusing to use and take several attempts before it renders what I want

You've found an interesting anomaly, all those settings in the 'Environment Node' are Iray Only!

My default lights these days are Khory's Caressed by Light sets. Although I do tend to use the Poser lights from some of Flipmode's Easy Environment sets as work lights. Sometimes leaving the sun light in the final scene for the main shadows.

    Never got into Iray.
