Postmodern, lol

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Postmodernism is an art movement that has nothing to do with sci-fi skimpwear or, for that matter, anything slick and glossy. I'm not even sure if it's possible to do postmodern CGI.

Am I the only one that's bothered when marketing grabs "sound bites" without knowing what they mean?

noting or pertaining to architecture of the late 20th century, appearing in the 1960s, that consciously uses complex forms, fantasy, and allusions to historic styles, in contrast to the austere forms and emphasis on utility of standard modern architecture.

    2.

Definitely a perfect description for skimp wear.

I want decent clothing, period. :-)

But I guess they took that "cutting edge" part too literally?

Coming out of the 1960's “modern” was commonly used to mean “current”, a moving timeframe which outstripped its usage as specific style period . . . which leads to some using “post-modern” to mean something like from “20 minutes into the future” to “20 years into the future”. :ohh:

Some would say that "decent" requires that it cover the ankles, wrists and face. Covering the face I can understand, but just how ugly or erotic or indecent can a wrist or ankle get???? :ohh:

Maybe men were even more easily aroused back then?

Perhaps it was the lack of pesticides and radioactive fallout? :-/

But I wasn't thinking of a "back then". I was considering the present. :smirk:

And I think we should give the women their say about completely obscuring some men too! %-P

And for the record, any attempts to make sense of fashion is like trying to explain the outcome of baking a big pot of garbage. :-S

I always assumed it was supply and demand kinda - the less there is to see, the more exciting a glimpse can be.

Dictionaries tend to cover the most common usage.

But DAZ is an artists site, unless they've changed what the "A" in "DAZ" stands for.

And in the art world, postmodern refers to something that gets away from the glitz of modernism, to something more traditional and more substantial. Postmodern isn't "from 20 minutes into the future to 20 years into the future", it's what you do when you get tired of chasing after the future and try to get back to something real, with a good healthy dose of skepticism and cynicism for science, politics, and alleged cultural movements.

I came from "out of the 1960s", and am very familiar with what "post modern" actually means. It's not 20 anythings into the future. It's a rejection of what the modernists said the future would be, and encompasses everything from Duchamp's "found objects" to Warhol's soup cans.

    http://www.onpostmodernism.com/art

Rene Magritte is a personal favorite of mine. David Bailey, Lee Frielander, and Sarah Moon are other personal favorites that happened to make this particular list of the 100 most influential postmodern artists.

    http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/postmodernist-artists.htm

Frielander and Moon, especially, feel more like they're 100 years into the past, not 20 years into the future. So is the work of Annie Leibovitz. And yes, there are a lot of photographers on that list. Another characteristic of postmodernism is that photography started to be treated more like a serious artform, instead of just documentary work.

So are Harvey Littleton and David Chihuly (yes, the studio glass movement of the 1960s is considered "post modern").
