Any tricks for Reality 4 when using smart ibl?

I was trying Reality 4 out yesterday. I used a smart ibl following instructions provided in a video by the Reality creator. Though the image used was quite bright the render kept turning out dark. Since I didn't know what I was doing :) I tried adding the sunlight which came with Reality, tried a mesh light, tried increasing the intensity but just ended up with a bunch of other problems. I tried adjusting the gamma after some research but it made no difference. I finally just let it render out for about 9 hours. The image is nice but still very dark so I'm going to have to do some editing to brighten. So for future reference are there any tricks for lighting with ibl in Reality?

Take a look at your Camera exposure settings in Lux, which is controlled by the Tone Mapping section. Set your mapper to Linear, then click Estimate Settings to get a decent starting point for tweaking the Film ISO spped, Shutter Speed, & F/Stop. Depending on the IBL, you may have added too much light. Start with just the IBL & increase it's gain settings in your Reality UI, You might have to boost it to a 3-5 depending on what type of scene it is.
Thanks for the reply. The scene is a portrait of 2 Genesis figures using the ibl as the background. When I try to increase the ibl gain in Reality one of the figure's face loses texture and turns white. The rest of the figure keeps the textures and so does the other Genesis figure. This is the 2nd time it has happened. Then when I try to start again Reality can't find the texture. It is most odd. I'll try to adjust the Camera settings and see if that will work to lighten the image. I might try to use one of the DT Skies and see if I have any more success with those.
Thanks! Following your advice made all the difference and also had a read through the Luxrender wiki on camera settings and have a better understanding.
