When I render this product I only get the hair cap...no hair, also it only shows a preview in texture based mode.
What am I missing here? How do I get the hair to render?

That's dForce hair, so by default it won't show in Iray preview to save resources.
If it also doesn't show in a full render, check which tool is currently selected: if you have selected a tool like geometry editor, joint editor or mesh grabber then dForce hair won't render.
Strand based hairs like this generate an extremely large amount of geometry that is very poorly optimised for an interactive viewport, so by default they will only render in a final render, not any of the viewport options.
One can increase their viewport tesselation and turn on the various other preview options that I forget what they're called in order to make them visible in the viewport, but this isn't particularly advised, even with absolutely top-end hardware. It is best, instead, to use a new window render to check how they look.
All of the above :)
Check and make sure your fun tools like mesh grabber, geometry editor, etc are not selected.
By default, that hair will not show in the preview render. If you have a lower-end computer, you should render it the old-fashioned way. By using the render button at the top of the screen.
If you have a decent computer, I provide settings to turn the hair on in the viewer:
Give the computer a few minutes to think, the hair will look different in the viewport and will now render in the preview render. To turn it off use the Preview OFF option.
Enjoy :)
