My GPU is not rendering with 100%?

I have been using Daz as an amateur for a few months by now, but i still can't find out, why my GPU isn't being used for rendering, more than a few percent?
The attached picture is me rendering on my RTX 3060 ti, of a room scene, with a girl T-posing in the middle. Yet task manager is telling me, that i have not exceeded Vram, but still only using 4%.
The scene still only takes a few minutes to render, but i assume it could be done in less than a minute, if i could use 100%?

You can also see that its not rendering using CPU, as it's only using 24%, and if i add more things to the scene, and exceed the VRAM, it goes to 100%, renders slower, but the GPU usage is the same?
I dont understand what is going on, hope someone can help :)

Click one of the graph headings and chnage it to CUDA  -you should then see that the relevant bots of the GPU are in fact working flat-out. Task Manager's default options are not useful for monitoring Iray activity.

I believe cuda has been incorporated into the generic "3D" heading now.

I have the RTX 3060 12GB model, it's not fast compared to higher end RTX cards but it's faster than CPU only rendering.

also, if your preview render hits one of the stop conditions, your GPU activity will show to have nearly stopped. That's because it has.

If you want to see more activity, you can change the stop conditions under Render Settings>Progressive Rendering.

Min Samples 100(click the little gear above the number here click "Parameter Settings"and uncheck the "use limits" box and you can est this as high as you want.

    Set Max Time to 0

    Render Quality 10

    Converged Ratio 100%

At default values, your 3060 ti shouldn't have a problem hitting the stop conditions quickly for simple preview renders and therefore the GPU will show no activity.

The CPU will always show some type of activity for a running program.

CUDA has not been included in the generic 3D heading.  That definitely rendered opn your GPU.  Richard's advice is solid.

My task manager doesn't have a heading for cuda.

    Edition Windows 10 Pro

    Version 21H2

    Installed on ‎9/‎18/‎2021

    OS build 19044.1566

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4170.0

I have a test render running now.

And yes Richard's advise is correct.

I only added that your GPU isn't going to show activity if one of the stop conditions had been met.

Then offered ideas to increase the stop condition values so it would show more activity, but also increase render times obviously.

  • It looks like this to me.
Since switching to Win10, my GPU is constantly at 0%
And DAZ told me to only render with the GPU if what's being rendered fits in memory.
but even if I render a single G8F without much on it, the CPU goes up and GPU stays asleep

Click the drop-down on 3D and select cuda. Or install GPU-Z.

As has been said get GPU-Z and you will get a better idea of how much your GPU is being used..

IceCrMn Interesting.  Do you have Virualization turned on in BIOS?  That will make CUDA disappear from the task manager for some reason.

Edit to add : Maybe it's Hardware Accelerated GPU Sceduling in WIndows Settings that does that.  I can't remember which for sure.

Interesting comment, Spacious.  I will check that setting when I restart.  Like IceCrMn, I do not see CUDA in my Performance Monitor's 3D drop-down.

I highly reccomend GPU-Z - it provides significantly more data - see attached render of an ultrascenery test with two copies of GPU-Z running (I normally only run the sensors tab).

Looks GPU-Z is pretty comprehensive, but I get prompted for admin username/password when I run it.  I am leery of such software.  I wll stick with Task Manager unless I really need it.

Your cpu is getting toasty and the card isn't being used - check the  graphics card tab and see if cuda is checked - you're missing a lot of the sensor measurements. This is either a driver issue or a system issue, like not recognizing the card at all. My post was also a 2070 and the displays should have the same sensors listed.

I've never run into that - strange.

  • Thank you all for your comments.
I switched the 3d drop down to Cuda, and i can now see that its being used as its supposed to!
Would have just been annoying if i was missing out on a bunch of performance for no reason, and was confused why the temp stayed so low, but it makes sense now.

Now i know i just have to be better at optimizing scenes, to get the pescky Vram usage lower, to keep the GPU engaged.

    Namffuak,

The reaon you do not get the admin username/password prompt when you run GPU-Z is because the acount that you are logged in to has administrator privileges - powerful, but unsafe.  I run under an account that does not have administrator privileges.  I have a separate administrator account for installing software and performing other system management activities. This protects me from unauthorize system changes, file accesses and software installs.  This protection is important when browsing the Internet and reading E-Mails.  Less convenient, but much safer.
