Unfortunately, I can't afford a new wiz-bang, EXPENSIVE video card, so I would like to know how I can save a backup copy of my current version of Daz Studio - just in case I lose it.

The most recent edition of D/S is in your Product Library. Manually download the relevant files for your OS, including the Default Resources [same page]. Also any additional plugins that you have for D/S [in case they are updated for next edition].
If you have an older edition that you are wanting to save, check where DIM or you put your downloaded files, and save those to another location. If/when DIM updates files, it overwrites previous downloads.
What I do is I have an external drive. My library is on a drive by itself. When a new version comes out, I zip up the current install of daz, name the zip with the DAZ version, and move it onto my external then install the new version. Since DAZ seems to be a somewhat portable program, I actually, currently, have 3 versions of DAZ "installed." 4.15 in a folder named DAZ 415, 4.16 is in DAZ 416, and DAZ 4.20 is in the default install folder. They all work and I have a shortcut to each on the desktop. I simply renamed the default install folder to a name matching the program version and let it install the new version in the default location.
In Windows machine DAZ Studio instalation will be at
1. C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D
2.. C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D
3. Optional for Smart Content restore : C:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\Downloads
SO backup those folder (and subfolder ) first . For content library you can backup and restore to any drive as long you re-link via EDIT>Preferences>Content > Click Content Directory Manager then in Content set option pick ADD to browse where new directory located
The final restore action will be Go to Content Library TAB .Click Small hamburger menu in top right >Content DB Maintenance >Tick Top Four option . This step will bring back Smart Content items , just remember you need to backup DOWNLOAD as mentioned in step 3 above
