Autofitting G8F eyelashes to G8M issue

I just tried to fit G8F eyelashes to a G8M-based female character. At first glance, the result is superb, but then I noticed an odd semi-transparent sort of linear (apparently geometric) artifact darting down from the lashes. It disappears when I make the lashes invisible, so I know they're the culprit. I tried adding a smoothing mod and fiddling with it to no avail. Has anyone encountered this or know how to overcome it?

Edit: I deleted them and tried again, and the issue is gone for the moment. Very strange. It'll be interesting to see if it reoccurs when I close and reopen the scene.

  • Update: The issue manifests again when I close and reopen the file/scene. The odd artifact shows in the render, so I may be stuck using the default.G8M lashes.

There are wonderful products too: https://www.daz3d.com/lashes-utilities-for-genesis-2-3-and-8

Thank you for that. I'm trying to avoid throwing money at every issue I encounter, though.

Understood... You might try changing the scene identifer so that the eye lashes are for both G8M and G8F instead of G8F too.

I forgot about that. But can't you only slect one, and shound the Preferred Base be G8M?

You can add as many as you like such as G3M, G3F, G3M etc... Remember that it is ADD a compability base...

So the Preferred Base should be G8M? Am I changing any other fields?

Sorry, I wasn't clear... keep the first preferred base as G8F, add the G8M... you are not switching bases, you are adding new ones.

     Thank you. I appreciate it.

  • Sorry, I must be dense, but my Scene Identifier seems  to allow me to select only one Preferred Base at a time.

Ah, they have changed the selection of compatability base in the newer versions of Daz Studio... there used to be an edit metadata dialog which is now missing....

Thank you for your trouble anyway! Looks like I might be buying one of those other products after all.

Edit Metadata is still in the right-click menu on a product.

One thing to consider is that the UV map for lashes on male and female is nearly identical. So instead of trying to fit female lashes to males, you can simply copy the surface materials of the female lashes you want and paste this onto the male lashes. The males actually have pretty large lashes by default, so changing the opacity map to one of a female's will instantly make the male have longer lashes. If you have any male lash morphs, you can use them as well. So while you might not have your female lash morphs, you should be able to make lashes that look just like most females without spending much effort.

If you still want longer lashes and don't have a morph, you can buy buy one or find a free one if there is one. If not, this would be a good time for some Hexagon use. Lashes don't have many polygons at all. Load a base model in default pose, with lashes. Click on the lashes and have them highlighted, send to hexagon. This should send only the lashes to hexagon, we don't need or want the Genesis model in hexagon. Select the X mirroring function so you can work on both at once. Then you can use the vertice selector to pick the fartherest out vertices and move them. It might take a little practice to get used to if you haven't done it before, but it is doable without too much effort. When satisfied send the lashes back to Daz, and save this as a new morph with a unique name. Once saved as a morph the G8M lashes will have the morph available for all your G8M characters.

But I doubt you'll need or want to do that as long as you are not trying to create very large lashes. I think the default will work pretty well, and you probably have at least one morph that will make them bigger.
