You need geometry to catch shadows - at the simplest a plane for the ground and/or the walls.

it has options for working with backdrop
is there any documentation out there ?
I often used normal shadow catchers and know how to use them
    I thought this was different

I could never get the backdrop thing to work the way I thought it was supposed to. And that was in Studio 2. It worked kinda, but I think there was a problem with rendering to a separate window or somesuch. It may have been my (mis)understanding but I gave up on it even before Studio 3. On the other hand, I've used a plane for shadow catching as recently as 4.6 (IIRC) but it doesn't capture AO so I don't even use that very often.

At one point the backdrop option didn't work with the render set to the viewport sizxe (that is, the Active Viewport preset for size).
