New folders with .exr files appearing with each render

Not sure what's happening, but now every time I render something a new folder appears in my render directory with 3 files in it named after the render, appended with beauty.exr, depth.exr, and alpha.exr .  What are these?  Whey are they appearing?  Can I get rid of them?  How do I turn off whatever changed?

Those are canvases. In the Render Settings pane, click on the Advanced tab at the top, then click over to Canvases. There, you can either change which canvases are generated, or disable canvases entirely.

  • Where? And how did they get enabled?

Canvases should be right next to Hardware, but I don't know why it's not there for you. Maybe try switching to the default layout?

It's the style (Window>Style>Select Style) - as you can see at the top, the colour of the text for inactive tabs is the same as the pane's background colour. Click next to the active sub-tab label and you should be able to change

  • Ah!  Thank you, that did it.  And it seems that it just got set somehow on one character, and followed her into other projects.  Could it have been the 'defaults' button?

No, but Render Settings do get saved with the scene so if you had opened the file with the character and then added other elements the cancvas options would have persisted - that shouldn't happen if the file was merged into another scene that already had content, however.
