Daz Studio corruption?

Hi team, I'm on a code red. Suddenly when trying to load, well, all sorts, I appear to have a lot of files missing and the attached pics show the result.

Now, I have benn installing few freebies lately and may have mistakenly corrupted other files, lots of them it would appear. An example of messages I'm getting is attached.

I'm on Daz V 4.15 and suspect I need to do a fresh install. Anyone know if this will reinstate my files?

Many thanks

What method or methods are you using to install the products?

I unzip the package and install content folders to My Daz Library, as I have alwats done. However, 1 package asked "You have a newer folder that already exists, do you want to replace it?" Normally I say No but I think I may have mistakemly said yes on one. Tried to stop it but maybe the damage was already done. Don't really know if this caused the issue...

Reinstalling the Daz Studio program will not restore your content files. It looks like you accidently deleted a lot of them by replacing a folder. You will need to reinstall each product that had files in the deleted folder. Or restore your Daz Content Library from a backup that you (hopefully) have previously created.

Edit: And don't be tempted to let Daz Studio install those missing product from inside the Daz Studio program!!!!!!!!!!!!! That will install using Daz Connect and put the files in a whole different folder structure on your hard drive. Then you will really have a mixed up mess of content files in multiple places, sometimes duplicated.

So if I understand correctly, I look at the missing files/Folders in the message in more detail and reinstall them, whether from a back up (Which I did Nov 20) or revisit the sites I have bought assets from since then and reinstall from there.

    Thank you

To be safe, before doing any restoration work, you might want to make an additional backup of your current library - but don't overwrite your November backup!

If you can figure out what the top level folder was that was replaced, and then restore files from the November backup into that folder and subfolders, that might resolve a lot of the problems. Don't replace the existing folder with the backup folder, though, just merge the backup contents into it. How successful this is depends on how much you installed after November that wouldn't be recovered that way. Then you would need to reinstall those products and any updates to products that were installed since November.

If you can't figure out what folder it was that was replaced, you could just replace the whole current library with the November backup library and then reinstall all products and updates since that time.

I'm sorry you are in this mess. You might want to consider Daz Install Manager for future use. It works very well when properly configured.

Edit: And good for you for making a backup! yesyes Many people don't bother, and then they lose everything and have to start over.

  • Okay guys, I have tried to load several assets, scenes, characters, props etc and they are all causing a problem. The main issues are with my data and runtime/textures folders, too numerous to mention, so I have decided to reinstall DS and all of the assets I have bought via Daz Central and then all of the assets I have bought from such sites as Renderosity, Renderhub etc. It will be time consuming but a lot less complicated than trying to identify which files are missing and then go look for them, many of which I will probably never find.

If anyone can think of an easier way, by all means let me know

Many thanks for all of the advice

Thanks my friend, having said the above I will try your suggestion first, that may eliminate a lot of re-downloading! If I find something missing as I go along I can just attend to those assets :)

  • barbult, also I have already backed up my current library :)

If you've got that many problems stemming from overwriting your data/ folder, and you've got a complete backup from November, you're probably best off just deleting your entire library and replacing it with a copy of your backed up November library.

In the future, maybe you want to think about manually installing files from wherever in a completely separate library.  That will avoid this sort of thing.  Personally I use a third library as sort of test zone to manually install random content and make sure it's complete, organized well, and doesn't cause any conflicts.  If it works correctly, then I move it into my second library witth the other manually installed items.

Do you log in to DS, or have you enabled "automatically login using the saved credentials"?

  • Ok team, part 2

I have spent a day or two downloading and reinstalling all of the assets I have bought over the last 3 or 4 years and mostly getting there. But, I have a cosistent problem of missing files when I try to apply them to my scene, usually .jpg's and when I look for them in the downloaded content folders there are no jpg's in there! Any ideas?

    Many thanks

That is at least one problem with your setup.

When you are installing content manually or with DIM or DAZ Central, there is no need to log in to DS.
You only need to Log in to DS, if you intend to install the content with DAZ Connect within DS
