Vellus Horizon Upgrade

Hello beautiful people! Just wanted to let those of you who have the Vellus Horizon Shader System know that I just completed a major upgrade, and should be sending it off to the inspectors/testers sometime tomorrow, unless there's an earthquake or something. This upgrade will feature slight tweaks to the maps and shaders, a greatly simplified workflow, and full support for Genesis 8.1 so you don't have to fiddle with workarounds.

Thanks for your support!

Woohoo! I use this in every render now! It'll be great not having to use a workaround for 8.1. Will you also be supporting males? I use it on G8M/G8.1M, but it's just the female version I've used a workaround with to get it working on males.

Glad to hear it! No support for males, that will require a separate product, because the maps are different, and the way vellus hair distributes is different, but it's always a possibility for a future project.

How long do you think will it take till it is available as an update in Download Manager?

If it sails smoothly through testing, I don't imagine it will be long, but the exact time is not up to me.

I only learned about this in a recent course and I've been waiting to see if it comes onto 8.1. Can't wait, it looks like an absolutely fantastic product!

So I was wondering.  Since you have figured out how to create the effect, is there any possibility of a product we can apply to existing garments to give them a similar finish?  I'm thinking of worn flannels, especially, but also jerseys, and heavier knits and wovens.  No matter how good the normals and bump maps are, they always look a little flat to me.  There wouldn't be any maps required, just a bit of fuzz and perhaps a few thickness options that we could apply to a geoshell.

Interesting idea! I'm going to take this into my lab and see what's possible...

That's a great idea...because yes! clothing always looks flat no matter how good you might be able to get it to lay w/ dForce.

That sounds similar to UHD Fuzzy Cloth - Shaders and Merchant Resource

I own that, and like it. It comes with its own diffuse layers and creates the illusion of thickness by stacking geoshells.  You can slot in whatever diffuse map you want, if you want to make the effort.  I did that for a tiger skin rug once.

What I'm thinking about would be something that just puts a thin layer of "vellus" on top of any existing garment fabric to, just to give the impression that the fabric isn't brand new and 2 dimensional.  Some garments don't need that help as much, but others, especially if the bump maps aren't great could benefit more.
