Fire within effect for G3F & G8F characters

Are there any packages that will allow me to produce the following effect ...

I want it to look like there is a fire inside the character glowing brighter as the flame spreads and gets bigger.

The character models are hollow so it's simple to put a point light or a geometry based light inside and vary the luminance of the light as appropriate. Set the colour temperature to get a red/orange glow and the effect is quite interesting. You may have to slot in additional small planes to limit the extent of the light in the limbs but that, again, is simple.

You can also play about with the Max Path Length in Render Settings -> Optimzation to limit the spill of light onto surrounding geometry if that's a goal as well. The default setting is -1 which will bounce light about indefinitely until it finds a source, but setting it to an actual number like 2 or 3 reduces the bounce light.

There isn't a way to see the actual geometry of a fire inside a character that is opaque without making that character transparent to some extent. In any case, the first two images in your sequence look like the character is wearing clothing with a fire motife rather than actually having an internal fire!

Failing that, it's Photoshop time unfortunately.

Give your character a geoshell with negative offset, perhaps -0.3 or something like that.

Make the geoshell emissive, put a flame texture in its emissive slot.

Apply a opacity map to the geoshell to control the shape of the effect.

I have these two sets from Sickleyield but haven't had a chance to use them. Could one of them work for you?

    Fire Within

Auras for G8F I have the male version as well.

Thank you. Is there a particular light source that you would recommend?

  • You might want to have a look at this dude and how it works:

Look into MRL Mutations (G3F), MRL Mutations: Aliens, Angels and Others for Genesis 3 and 8 Female(s). Combine with SY Skin Transform for Genesis 8 to get progressive skin changes. You can use them on G3 and G8 with the usual interop hacks (because of the hierarchical material presets for G8 and those eyelashes)

Just select your character, then  Create > New Geometry Shell

Sometimes it is just easier to use a 2D program to fix it in post.

Here's a quick guide using a base G8F. This will work using G3F as well, following the same process (any generation in fact, as long as they use the Uber shader).

    1. Load up your character and select it in the Scene tab.

    2. Go to your Surfaces tab and select the surfaces as shown.

    3. Find the Thin-Walled property and click it until it says 'On'.

    4. Create a point light and drag it up into the figure's chest. I used the following settings. Play around with the Temperature slider to get the colour you require, rather than changing the colour of the actual light.

    5. Start with the light at a reasonably low setting and keep increasing. That's it...! I have a suspicion it's not *exactly* what you were looking for, but it's free, easy and works on any character.

  • And more than one light can be used.

Yup - you'll need one for each limb and head as required. Also, a point I forgot to mention.... any clothing will need to be made partially transparent/translucent for the light effect to shine through. This is a simple matter of slightly reducing the cutout opacity in the surfaces tab of the clothing or playing with the translucency settings. It works ok but I can't show an example as it is a bit too revealing for the forums!

Turns out a red hot chest reveals all of its secrets so you might want to keep an opaque bra on female characters if your intended audience wouldn't appreciate it...

By far the best solution to this is Driggo's suggestion of drilling down into how the Holm character was created and reproducing the effect. Mine is just quick, cheap and easy, but not the best.
