GPUs approaching MSRP again finally?

Hey y'all!

I just picked up a RTX 3060 over at Newegg at the 'revised' MSRP that's been on their site for months/over a year now.  The particular Asus dual fan card I was looking at (need a @200mm or shorter card to fit in my smaller case) had an original MSRP of $329, and a revised MSRP of $449, and apparently there's now a $409 MSRP listed as well (out of stock of course).  Anyways, I took the $449 as a win, as I've been holding off on grabbing this card for over a year now.  It's showing as unavailable again, but other cards are in the $400-$550 range right now on Newegg's site.

Asus muttered something about dropping the MSRP of their cards at the beginning of April, so that's worth noting.  I may have jumped the gun too soon, but as I said, I've been waiting on sub-$500 pricing on this card (new) for a while now...

Amazon has a number of 3060 12gb cards in the sub-$600 range as well.  Even Best Buy is finally showing cards as available in store recently, just not the card I wanted.

I was also watching a dual fan EVGA 3060 card that is also short enough to meet my case clearance issues, but didn't see one in the sub-$500 today, and Newegg said they would send me the Asus card this week (shipped by Newegg) so yeah... many of the other dual fan RTX 3060 designs are longer than @200mm, so they won't meet my needs.

As for why 3060, 12 GB of VRAM, in my price range, some dual fan models short enough for my mini case, didn't see any 3070 or higher card 'shortie' designs, best bang for buck IMHO.

Of course, the 40 series cards are right around the corner (September?  Sooner?) but of course then we get to wait on Daz Studio compatibility, and I'm still using an older version because I trust it, so I doubt that 40 series compatibility would be coming to pre 4.20 Daz Studio installs.

Anyways, just wanted to celebrate my 'win' of sorts!  It's about time!  Hopefully this is good news r.e. improved pricing and GPU availability to others that have not been willing to pay scalper prices...

Cool! Yes, I've noticed the same thing. I have a thread about that here:

I didn't see your thread on the first page or two, otherwise I probably would have posted there..

Update:  A bunch of Asus dual fan RTX 3060 dual fan cards just popped up at Newegg at that $409 price in a late day restock (I ended up being able to take advantage of this/cancelled my previous order before it was processed).  Also seeing a bunch of other cards atm below $450.  Best of luck y'all

No worries. Some threads last longer than others. It seems GC prices are slowly dropping across the range. It's very good news!

...that's about what I paid for my 3060 direct from EVGA last summer.  Was probably one of the last 3060s they had as about a week or so afterwards they closed the wait list for that particular card.

I wonder how much this has to do with the rising energy prices and the fall of ETH last January, it could mean mining activities have dropped.

I just checked Newegg and they have even 3060Ti at under $600, which isn;t too bad considering. Those are only 8gig though. Wonder why?

Most games can't address more than 8GB, and 3060 ti is a game card. I've read the 3060 was boosted to 12GB because of its surprisingly narrow 192-bit memory interface. Its 6-chip card architecture apparently means the choice was 6GB or 12GB . The first 3060s were 6GB. For whatever reason, NVidia increased that to 12GB; and here we are. It's a gift for DS and maybe makes little difference anywhere else.

I'd have preferred to go with a 3080 ti, but those are still north of $1400 with the best models in the $1500-$1600 range. Also, doing that would have demanded a more expensive processor with more expensive cooling and a more powerful PSU.

Well the RTX 3080 Ti has an Octane Bench result of 644 (average of 278 results I'm guessing).

I picked the 3060 because it's faster than dual 1080s, and of course the 1080 Ti.

    2x RTX 3060:

    583

I was about to say if you have the PCIe slots go for dual 3060's but yeah the RTX 3080 Ti still manages to be faster, so there's that.  Still, you can afford multiple 3060s for the current asking price of a 3080 Ti on Newegg, but you'd also have to have enough PSU wattage, power connectors and double-spaced PCIe slots to accomodate the multiple cards.  I'm seeing several 3080 Ti cards on Newegg right now in the $1400-ish range.

    For Reference:

    1x RTX 3060

    285

    1 x GTX 1080 Ti

    190

    2 x GTX 1080

    263

Octanebench is close enough for our purposes when gauging performance, hence why I use it.  Sure, there's a benchmark thread here, but Octanebench has more results...

For DS and Iray, I would not buy a GPU with 8GB VRAM anymore

I'm using GTX 1080s right now, since my 1080 Ti died a while back, so I can sympathize with this.  This is why the RTX 3060 12GB is so appealing.  Faster than a 1080 Ti and has more VRAM than said 1080 Ti, and I paid less than half for the 3060 vs. when I bought said 1080 Ti (which was a bit over MSRP/over $1000 at the time I bought it of course), so yeah...

I can 'make do' with 8 GB of VRAM by doing multiple render passes and such on more complex scenes, but I miss the 11GB, that's for sure.  I just don't have the budget right now for a 3080 Ti or 3090, and the 3060 uses less power too!

    So, in short, I concur.

Multiple 3060s are showing as available on Newegg's site today below $500, which is nice to finally see.  No Newegg Shuffle necessary!  Amazon seems to be a bit slower in this regard, not seeing any RTX 3060 cards below $500 sorting low to high, I'm also seeing multiple RTX 3060s in the $400 or so range ATM in my Amazon search.  No idea about Best Buy, no plans to go there now as I have a RTX 3060 card incoming supposedly, waiting on the tracking number.

I seem to remember something about tariffs on GPUs shipping to the US of A being suspended temporarily and retroactively as an 'anti-inflation' measure, so that may be in play as well.

Agreed.  Currently running dual 1080 TI's.  If I'm going to upgrade my GPU someday, I expect an upgrade in VRAM, too.  That said, I'm waiting for a significant price drop on the 3090.
