Daz file system all over the place

edited April 2022 in Daz Studio Discussion

Hello

I've a lot Daz products both from Daz shop and other sites.

My assets/products seem to be all over the place. I sometimes come across stuff I didnt know I had - there seems to be so many files and paths now.

In my content library, I have 4 Files

My library ....C:\Users\admin\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library

My Daz 3D library ....C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library

My Daz library .....C:\Daz 3D\Applications\Data\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library

And then, MY Library....C:\Users\admin\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library

Could I delete some of these files and re-install products from Daz central or DIM - maybe creating my own filepath, say on my dsktop where I could keep everything in one place?. Would Dim be better for installing assets than central ?

Most of them seem to have content, so if you remove the folder from the list you will lose the content. manually installed content drectroies can safely be merged, anything that one of the installers has written to will have noted the absolute location for uninstalling (which won't affect using the content but might be an issue with updates)

  • Tahnk you for the advice

  • I have setup my DAZ Content directory, so that none of it is stored on the C: drive in my private profile.  I do this because:

    1. If I update or reload Windows, I do not have to worry (as much) about wiping out my content.

    2. Is easier to manage directory permissions, do backups, and relocate the Content to another computer.

    3. The DAZ content directory can get quite large, which is why I do not recommend storing it on C:.  If you run out of room on C:, you might not be able to boot your system.  It is a good rule of thumb to keep your data (DAZ, Financial, Personal, Porn, etc.) on a separate drive from the operating system and programs.

Setup your DAZ content directory where YOU think it best belongs, then adjust DS, DIM, and DAZ Central accordingly.

Thank you. Yeah Im going to get a couple of portable SSD. So, both Daz Central and DIM will install to wherever you tell it to easy enough?

Don't use DIM and Central.  Central is a dumbed down version of DIM so stick to using DIM.

And if you use DIM to install your content, do not log in to DS (ever), do not let DS use your credentials to log in to DAZ servers automatically.

Logging in to DS is only necessary when you use DAZ Connect inside DS to install content, and if you install content inside DS, installing them with DIM or DAZ Central has no purpose as any content installed by DAZ Connect inside DS, overides content installed by all the other means - One is just wasting space installing everything at least to two different locations.

  • Hello good people of the Daz filing system hell hole.

Thanks for the advice. Ive now got a portable 1tb ssd and putting it all on there. Things are starting to look more managable
