ALT-Drag character into scene

A long time ago I discovered that by holding down the ALT key and dragging my character from my library into a scene (where there is a convenient circular marker to indicate the spot), I could place the figure where I wanted it.

Well, sometimes. For some reason it often doesn't work like that and the figure ends up way off the mark and I have to zero all translations and start from scratch. Does anyone know why this is and how to ensure that the figure actually lands where I want it?

It's possible the object you're trying to load was saved with non-zero translations, in which case it's being placed with those translations relative to where you're placing it.

It always gets dragged in a Y = 0, so if there is any elevation involved, and you are looking from an angle, parallax is the problem. Try looking straight down when ALT-dragging in an item. At least you will get the proper X-Z location, then just raise it up (or lower it) with Y Translate.

Ah right - that sounds reasonable. I have tried with the same figure dragged to different places in the scenes and, again, sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. But you may be right in thst I tried to drag it to an elevated place.

I'll try again later with a TOP view in the vieport.

Tip: Drop a camera there so you don't lose your place everytime you want to drag something in.

I normally switch between Default and Perspective cameras - default being my "render camera" and Perspective being my camera to wander around the scene without losing my render view.
