why is my scrollwheel zoom sometimes limited logarithmically to a random maximum?

I'm sometimes working on an object, and I can zoom in very close to do vertex editing. Then I do something, and I never know what, that suddenly causes the viewport to act as if the whole scale of the model is suddenly much tinier.

The effect is that when I try to zoom into a close area, I no longer can do so, because the zoom effect stops zooming in. It's almost like the closer I try to zoom, it only zooms 1/2 the distance per tick, and then 1/2 of that, and so on, until I essentially can't zoom in at all.

Anyone have this too>? Is there a reason and how do I stop it?

Why it does that, I have no idea - it happens to me with other software as well.

What you need to is to use the little magnifying glass down in the bottom left of the UI to draw a selection around the part you want to zoom in on. After doing that, the mouse wheel zoom goes back to normal.
