My 3 rooommates and I wonder if it`s possible our 5th roommate's Minecraft server could be eating our bandwith. -.-

    Gameservers are notorious bandwidth hogs...

Turn it off and see if your mileage improves.

I suspect you'll need a conversation with your 5th roommate about a separate network connection or compensated cost percentage and lowered expectations for your own service.

However, it also depends on your external service level and your internal network technology.

Is your external provider: Cable or DSL or Satellite or Cell? What level of service are you paying for 6MB/sec, 10MB/sec, 20MB/sec, ... If you're paying for that level of service are you actually getting it? Turn off all but one machine directly connected to the external service and use a upload/download speed website ( www.speedtest.net ) to measure your actual connection speed at any moment in time.

Is your internal network wired or wireless? If wired, is your router 100MHz or 1000MHz? If wireless are you sure your reception for each machine is optimal? Are you competing with other wireless devices in the building or neighbors? Also, if wireless, are you dual channel or single channel? Use a free wireless monitoring app like "inSSIDer" by www.metageek.com/ to visualize channel overlap or conflict.

A lot of factors affect bandwidth, so don't evict the 5th roommate until you know the score. If he's truly hogging all the bandwidth you need to tell him and discuss the options.

Also, if you're using a phone company not-unlimited Cell service as your internet provider STOP. I've seen phone bills that go through the roof because the connection stayed open as long as any computer was running on the local network. I don't know why, and I didn't know how to stop it except turn completely OFF all computers AND the cell router. Problem of exorbitant bills went away when customer switched to DSL hard line service into the household wireless router.

    Edited to add:
Gack... I just examined the MetaGeek site and found that their products are no longer cheap or free. I have a stand alone copy of "inSSIDer"
that I got several years ago and had to buy my own dual channel USB wireless transceiver for the laptop to be able to see both channels of dual channel routers, and it works great but now MetaGeek seems to want gobs of money for professional level products. I guess they got popular. So, in summary, I don't have a free wireless channel analyzer to recommend at this time. :-(

Edited to add again: OK, so "inSSIDer" can still be obtained free from the free software depot "MajorGeeks.com" but it's probably the older version which is OK for basic home use. Although when downloading from sites like MajorGeeks be careful to not click on the wrong button and end up with a demo for some product you didn't want. And be sure to virus scan the hell out of it before installing it.

Hard to tell without an extended psychological profile of your 5th roommate. Generally, roommates eating other people's stuff is not completely unheard of.

Nor is roommates eating other people. One is preferable to the other. But I'm not sure of the nutritional value of bandwidth so it may not satisfy his hunger and I'd keep an eye on him.

You gotta watch the extra roomie, a hidden video camera caught one doing awful stuff with the others toothbrushes and spitting and urinating in the others food.
Search youtube and you will see many cases of such rouge roomies, indeed two did eat a third once in one crime I read about.

Not this old fart! Makeup was not my scene. >:-(

And I hope we haven't scared away the original poster. He had a meaningful question and I answered it to the best of my ability for this stage of the game. We'll come back on track when we know more about the success or failure of the situation. Meanwhile, enjoy the show. :cheese:

Oh my... one crime at the time. I'll concentrate on the possible bandwith ingest for now. o__o
