Those are internal Studio shortcuts used to reference the real file. They can be moved about at will, but the real assets cannot be moved from their intended relative installation location. They can also be created inside Studio by selecting one or more files, right-click on one of them and choose "Create Link for Asset(s)...". They are simple text files with a path, nothing more. Useful to avoid duplicating files everywhere, like material settings for the same items used by different figures, i.e., G3F and G8F.
I noticed this myself not long ago..By what I have discovered is that .djl files are like shortcuts in windows. They point to another file. This allow the same asscert item to be seen in multible locations within your runtime without running into dup errors. They do not have thumbs because they use the thumb for the item they are pointing too. If you are getting errors when trying to click on one, then most like problem is that points too is either missing or been moved or renamed or itself has an error.
EXAMPLE: I've have a special runtime for converting older Poser items to DAZ native DUF format. In the image below, you will see in the content window 2 fantasy sailboats, with thumbs. Those are actually .djl files. The explorer window at the bottom left is open to that directory showing the 2 files without thumbs.djl files are plain text files and the the Notepad in the upper left shows the text of one of the djl files. It is a simple pointer to the actual file located at (content/)"!Water/! ! Vehicle's/! Fantasy/Half Moon Boat/Half Moon Boat.duf" which is futher up in the directory tree. I actually used that djl file to load the Half Moon Boat into the workspace.
Now, all i need to do is find someone with mad DAZ scripting skills who can write/create a script allowing easy creation of these file.
<curtsy> followed by a mad scientest <bawhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa>

May any mischief by the Little People only be sweet, and you find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Texan Cowboys are tough. Got a wild unruly bronc? No problem. Got a mean spirited steer. Bring it on. They eat horseshoes and spit nails. Green Berets? Special Forces? Bunch of wimps in their book. But there is one thing even they are weary of. Texan cowgirls.
