Given a Desktop - RTX3060?

Hey Team!
I was talking to my workmate about how I have been experimenting with animation but don’t like to leave my laptop on overnight to render 60 scenes due to CPU cooling issues (GPU is fine). He’s recently built a new gaming system and just gave me his old desktop for free.
I haven’t fired it up yet as I have to plug in some cabling but it’s about 5 or 6 years old and the specs are:
Corsair Graphite Series 230T case
FSP Aurum CM AU750M Gold Power Supply
Asus Hi70 Pro Gaming Motherboard
Asus Turbo GTX1070 8GB GPU
32GB (2x16) G-Skill DDR-4-2400 RAM
Intel CPU but unknown spec as it has a Coolermaster cooler on it.
480GB Scandisk SSD
I have a couple of spare 500GB drives and will probably drop one or both of those in too.
It should handle animation OK yet with RTX3060 cards being so cheap & in plentiful supply right now, I was thinking of chucking one in. Would this system be able to take a RTX3060?

Yes.

While it should, the one thing is that you will likely not be able to go to Windows 11, since EoL for Windows 10 ends in 2025.. While ASUS have enabled compatability for Windows 11 on many older generation boards, it looks like the Asus H170 Pro Gaming was not one of them..
That's OK, it won't be a permanent solution as I figure if I throw in a 3060 and some more RAM (it only has 16G it turns out), it would last me a year or two until I can look at the next build. With the changes happening in the PC scene right now, I'm just looking for a carry-over like a lot of other folk were talking about in the RTX thread. I picked up the 3060 today and will grab some RAM tomorrow to take it to 32GB.
Thanks for your feedback team.
Ahh no worries..
I reckon you will be very happy with a RTX 3060, I know I am even more so with not having to worry too much with scene and texture optimization, although I still do so I can cram more into my renders.. ![smiley smiley](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/regular_smile.png)
Open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab, click CPU in the list on the left (if not already selected). The CPU name should be displayed top right. Alternatively, the CPU will be displayed in the bios.
Or open the file explore and paste this in the top Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System
Your system is similar to the one I replaced in Dec 2021. It problably has an Inten Gen 7 processor, like mine did. My system did a goo job rendering and gaming with an RTX 2060 Super. Yours should do very well with an RTX 3060 12G. Your case and power supply should serve you well for your next upgrade.
All upgraded now, RTX 3060 and 32GB RAM and it goes quite well. Lots of flashing lights, even the new RAM glows. I haven't owned a desktop since 2004 and this weekend has been a massive learning curve getting back up to speed. The CPU is Gen 6 i7-6700 which won't be supported by Windows 11 either but a new MB & CPU won't break the bank if that needs to happen. I really enjoyed tinkering with a desktop again.
Don't give up on Win 11 yet they are in the process of testing all i7 CPUs Some have gotten it to work with that processor.

Besides, 2025 is 3 years out, and this system was free. Can't beat that. Plus MS has extended EOL time lines in the past, and I would bet money they do so again. Even if they don't, a lot of things can change in 3 years. We will have RTX 5000 by then, too, or whatever they call the 2nd generation that follows the 3000 series. The 3060 will be like the 1060 is today. Tech is always marching forward. Daz may not even be Daz in 2025.
