..well, need to win tonight's Megabucks Lotto first to afford a Titan X or even a 980 TI.

Crikey if I hit that, I could afford to build my beast of a workstation (found a dual CPU LGA 2011-3 MB with 4 PCI 3 x16 slots and eight 288 Pin DDR4 slots that will easily support 128GB - which can be upgraded to 512 GB).

  • I just got a GeForce GTX 970, which is $340.00 to 360.00 and I was able to do a basic Iray render in five minutes and I rendered a necklace in less than one. It has 1664 cuda cores and 4gb ram. It's not I am sure as great as those top of the line ones but it is working (and I am very happy!).

...you need to go into edit, delete the image, and re upload it as all I see is the "broken image" icon.

When you upload, wait to see the thumbnail appear below the comment window before posting.

Uploading images seems to have a few bugs in it yet.

Bugs or is very finicky...either way, do as KK suggested.

I am looking into a new custom built desktop and this is what the guy at the shop recommended in the quote but I did tell him I needed to have an nvidia card and I am pretty sure in the quote he has the wrong one.  Can any of you computer gurus tell me if this is ok for iray or what I should need and what here isn't needed?

    Asus R9390 DC2 8GD5 R9 8GB 512bit Video Card ???

    32 GB DDR3 Memory
    LG CD/DVD Writer
    240 GB SSD w/ 2TB HDD
Windows 7 Pro or 8.1 Pro
    Intel Core i7-4790 Processor
    ThermalTake Chaser MK-1 VN300M1W2N case
Cooler Master Silent Pro 2 1000W power supply
    Asus Sabretooth Z97 MARK 2/USB 3.1 motherboard

I think this is the video card I want...will it work in this setup?

ASUS STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5 GeForce GTX 970 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support G-SYNC Support Video Card

    thanks for any input

...think I'll stick to dual 8 core Xeons, four Titan X's, and 128 GB of memory in my next build, That should last a bit.

...well unless Nvidia releases a consumer GPU with 16 or 32 GB built on the new Pascal architecture. Would be nice to have 24,000 cores and all that video memory .

...and do the 1151 MBs support of quad channel memory?

Just got my  EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 yesterday in the mail. Put it in my PC, and had to go to bed to get up at 3am for work.

Can't wait to get home to run some test renders!

That first card he quoted is an AMD Radeon, not an Nvidia card.

The GTX 970 you want should work as that motherboard works with either Nvidia or AMD. Your motherboard also has integrated graphics, so you could use that for your display and use your 970 only for rendering.

My first test renders with the EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0.

CPU only 6 min 40 seconds.
GPU only no OptiX Prime Acc. 1 minute 40 seconds.
GPU + Optix Prime Acceleration 1 minute 20 seconds
    1000 x 769 pixels.

    I'm excited!

Thanks Kevin for the input, I thought that was a radeon video card, and I got a new quote with the nvidia 970.  I will probably add a second video card in the future, but I noticed that the ram maxed out at 32 gb so no upgrading there.

Kharma, my PC is a little older with just the recent expansion of RAM (from 16 - 32 and it did make some difference) and the new (gently used) ASUS card. It's been put together with parts bought over a few years:

32 GB Ballistix DDR3 1866  (PC3-14900) RAM  (you won't need more than this probably for DAZ Studio)
    AMD 8350 8-core 4GHz CPU
    Gigabyte motherboard GA-990FXA-UD3
    Seagate 1TB SATA hard drive
EVGA GTX 470 1280MB GDDR5 (now used for just the display)
ASUS DirectCU II OC GTX 780Ti 3GB GDDR5 (just for rendering)
Pioneer BDR-XD04 portable USB Blu-ray/DVD/CD writer
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 watt PSU (it and the case are the oldest parts)
    Windows 7 Pro
an old Ultra Aluminus case that I had to mod to get the ASUS card to fit (bought the case on clearance 3 or 4 years ago at MicroCenter for $27 - $29)

    Sure Kharma,
Nothing too impressive, it's an old machine

    CPU: i7 - 870 (6 years old) ~$66 used
MB: Gigabype Mother board GA-H55M-S2H (6 Years old) ~$60
    Power Supply: Broadway Com Corp P4OKIA600-Blue 600W ATX12V ~$25
    RAM: 8 GB Ram, G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) ~$50
HD:  1TB WD Hard Drive ~$50
Case: An old old ATX tower case that I've had many computer inside over the last 20 years. ~$free
    Video Card: EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 ( New! ) $309

So about $560 USD if I were to build it today. The bulk being the video card.
It works speedy enough for me. I don't feel like the down time is cramping my creativity. But it is just a hobby machine. If it were for a profesional artist, maybe it wouldn't meet the demand.

    Cheers and happy building!

    **Edit ** Win 7-64 Bit ~$80

...same her though only 3 years old.

    CPU: i7 930 280 GHz

    MB: ASUS P6T MB LGA 1366 x6 240 pin memory slots, x 2 PCIe 2.0 x16 slots

Memory: 12 GB Corwair DDR3 1333 in Tri Channel mode

    HDDs: 1 x 250GB Boot HDD 7,200 RPM  1 x 1TB Library Runtime HDD 7200 RPM

GPU: Nvidia GTX460, 1GB GDDR5 336 CUDA Cores (Also have 2 AMD HD 7950s that were uninstalled)

    PSU: Corsair 750W

Case: Antec P193 full height with 6 fans

    DVD:  LiteOn DVD burner

    Win7 Home.

Looking to upgrade to 24 GB memory and WIn 7 Pro as well as an Nvidia Titan - X.  The GTX 460 will be used to manage the displays.

  • KharmaKharma Posts: 3,214

Thanks so much for posting your specs, I decided to drop down to 16gb of ram ( will see how much price difference and can upgrade to 32 later)and went with the Nvidia 970 , and a bit smaller case, still liquid cooling tho) now I need to decide how necessary an ssd drive is or just go with the regular HDD.  With the specs I posted prior but changing the video card to a 980 w 4gb vram the computer was costing 3000.00 canadian dollars, and that was still no monitor... I am hoping to stay under the 2500.00 mark

  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 41,198

...well as I am still using CPU mode with Iray I find the move to 24 GB would be a huge help as I've seen the process go into swap mode on large scenes (which slows it down even more)

Since you are getting a GTX970 (4 GB) you should be fine as long as you don't create overly complex scenes with lots of high res textures.  I need at least 8 GB of video memory however the only Nvidia GPU that has it is the Quadro K5200 which is more expensive than a Titan X. (retail 2,499 USD). Even used ones on ebay are going for ,1500 - 1700 USD.

Would love to upgrade to a i7 980 Extreme (6 core/12 thread LGA 1366 CPU) which would help a bit more with the rendering speed. Going to be a while before I can scrape up the funds for that Titan X and even then it won't be quite as fast as advertised since my MB only has PCIe 2.0 x16 slots.

The system I mentioned above is also a homebuild rather than off the shelf or from a custom house. Would have cost about what you are looking at (sans display as well) had I gone the prebuilt route.

@kyoto kid    "I need at least 8 GB of video memory however the only Nvidia GPU that has it is the Quadro K5200 "

Why wouldn't you just get the Titan X w/ 12 Gb ram? Way cheaper than that Quadro and a lot more CUDA cores.

...that's what I'm saying.  According to indications last year, the Maxwell 980 was supposed to have 8 GB instead of 6.  I'd pay 650$ for that.  Just as well off getting a used Titan 6GB on ebay.

Sad that Nvidia or one of their vendors never developed an 8GB GTX GPU. 6 GB is too borderline for the types of scenes I do and paying that much for being able to render on the GPU maybe 50% - 60% of the time would not be a good investment.

Whatever happened to the deal DAZ was supposed to be working out with NVIDIA for discounted cards?

Just a personal suspicion - they probably couldn't get a deal that would be better than newegg or tiger direct - and decided the added problems of billing for and drop-shipping hardware along with the warranty and returns issues would just be prohibitive. So they decided they were a software/content company and quietly dropped the subject. And with my first 980 ti being DOA, I can't say I blame them. BTW - newegg's returns process is fantastic. I requested an RMA; two hours later I had an RMA number; two hours after that I had a link to a pre-print UPS label. A pre-paid UPS label. And the replacement is working great.

I've always loved dealing with Newegg CS, specifically about returns.  I've even had, for small items, them just ship the replacement.  But the bigger items/higher priced ones have always had quick turn around times.

..never had a shipping or DOA issue with Newegg.

I bought a new Antec Three Hundred Two case a week ago, and it came with no blades on the top fan. Newegg sent a prepaid return shipping label and the replacement should arrive in a couple days. I got quick and good service via phone from Newegg.

I'm willing to bet that a substantial part of this population isn't trying to do big Pixar / LucasArts style scenes. These would be the same folks that are running older machines / are self described hobbyists / have limited funds for the hobby. Perhaps I'm wrong. We all have some variable cpacity for self delusion, often no more apparent than in our hobbies.

Video memory disappears quickly using lots of large hi-res texture maps.  Iray uses about 3 bytes/pixel (average) for images (all images...diffuse, normal, bump, other controls...all of them) so when you start loading a decent poly figure, with hair/clothes and 'nice' textures' you will pass 1 and 2 GB rather quickly.   Not all 'big' scenes are relly that big...just a nearly naked Vicky, with a sword (of course), battling a lone dragon, in a temple (of course) can drop to CPU because it ran out of room.

For a 4k skin texture...that comes in around 150 MB per SURFACE! (How many surfaces are there on G3F?)

For those really big scenes  you need 8 or more GB (the nosebleed Quadros and Titans)  or a networked solution.

We did a bit of testing with a GTX 770 (2GB) card before making the 4GB recommendation. A single Genesis 2 Female, with HD Morphs, high res textures, clothing and hair may or may not fit on a 2GB card (It is definitely borderline.). You can, on average, fit 2-4 G2F with clothing and hair plus an environment onto 4GB.

Note that Displacement tesselation, if you are not careful with it, can and will spike a video card's VRam and throw it off the render, even with a 12GB card.

The resolution you're rendering at can also make a big difference; I've taken a scene using only just over 2GB to 3.8GB just by upping the resolution. It was, however, a large hike in res.

I've found a GPU and CPU widgets for windows 10, very useful for monitoring when rendering.

yep, widgets are not still dead...
