How good is the latest update 4.20.0.17?

Awesome!

It seems to represent a lot of really excellent work in implementing the remembering of the previous program state, and it works flawlessly!

Thank you Daz for adding this support!

As I see it there's a main break between 4.16 and 4.20 because of the different way iray works with emission. All the previous assets in the shop using emission will be affected and will not work in 4.20 until the PA updates. Same for 3rd parties. So personally I keep 4.15 and 4.20 as beta until things settle.

I was having trouble at first with load times, but perhaps I just needed to restart, also I was using the content directory instead of smart content.  I'm going to do a little more experimentation to see what happened.

    [Later]

Everything is working quite well now.  While I didn't start DAZ until I had alread installed the update, apparently I had to restart it for the update to "cook" (I don't know.)

Using it for some time now:

I usually don't need ghost lights, so I can't comment on that topic.

I don't do animations except from ocasionally for complicated dforce situations, so I can't say much about timeline and animation features.

But, dforce time, rendering time, loading time, stability, vram consumption, speed at initiating iray preview mode, stability are quite good. For me the 4.16, 4.20 range of DS is a huge progress compared to the older versions. Also a big plus is the new "guided sampling" mode in the render settings.

@RexRed - Specifically how much better from previous 4.20 versions?  I am on 4.20.0.2.  I haven't gone through the readme yet.

I'm using 4.20.0.11 (beta) and I can't confirm your observations. Render speed and Vram are not so much an issue for me since I got a 3090 but dForce simulations are really slow - certainly no quicker than previous versions - and switching into iRay Preview Mode is also slow, again no quicker than before. I see a button for Guided Sampling but have no idea what it is there for.

Had me intrigued as to what guided sampling is and came across this small article on it..

    https://irendering.net/whats-new-in-daz-studio-4-20/

    Quoted from the article:

    • Updated to the latest version of Iray (2021.1.0). In addition to volumetric rendering, this also adds guided sampling which should speed up the rendering of those dark corners of your scene.
