Flash gift card sales - bad idea! Please Daz don‘t do it again!

For those unaware, last night (3AM - 7AM my time) there was a sale offering 20% off gift cards. Without store credit I don't buy, and without 20%+ off the gift card i don't buy the card.

I'm only offering this as feedback. I know that the marketing people in Daz are trying new ideas and the consequences of those decisions are not always obvious.

Stopping me from buying it by a gift card by offering it at such a ridiculous time is... I'm sorry, it's just stupid. And I don't think this has ever happened before? The last gift card flash sale lasted 17 hours, not 4.

There is an easy solution to this, and it's the one that worked so, so well for many, many years. Don't do it. Make gift card sales long enough that everyone has a chance.

This is what I'm thinking now... I'm not just missing out on some random item in a flash sale. I've been denied a the gift card sale. That  means that through no fault of my own, I have to pay 20% more for every single thing I buy. Will I be prepared to do that? No!

I feel the point is subtly different to the general flash sales thread. The issue here is any region-specific gift card sales. Given how there are people that only buy on gift cards, preventing a proportion of those people from buying one at a good discount, is a really bad idea. Please, please, please don't do this again!

You didn't miss much. A person would have had to have bought two new releases AND used a coupon code to get the 20% off. Not a great deal, in my opinion.

Came here to post bascially the same.
It prevents me spending money with Daz, so I suppose they're doing me a favour with my heating bills.

It's obvious they don't care for European customers, among others of course. But personally I don't see a problem (rather, I raised the white flag years ago), there are other options.

Daz didn't stop you or deny your purchase.  You made a decision not to purchase something without a discount.

These ultra-short 'flash sales' help generate extra website visits.  For many e-commerce businesses, that's an important metric.  Of course, some percentage of those extra visits will lead to a sale, and some percentage of those sales will be profitable.

Daz seems to have a flash sale on gift cards at least three times a week these days.  A person checking the site four or five times a week is bound to stumble into a gift card sale once or twice a month.

My complete and utter guess is that they don't hate us! The Daz team probably are messing about with new ideas, and they thought "hey, how about a 4-hour gift card sale, we never did that before, let's try it!"  but they are not good at thinking outside MST. So because I see evidence they do read these comments., this is my message to them...

Gift card sales are not normal sales. They influence spending patterns for weeks, not the few hours the sale lasts. People without the card spend less, and many will spend nothing at all, especially if they don't feel they had a fair chance to get the card in the first place.

I don't think they thought it through, but whatever the reason, I'm not paying 20% over the odds for all my purchases.

Feels like semantics, I think we are saying the same, I have had far too much of this shortsighted US-specific thinking to get annoyed by it anymore. My feeling is that they did not give me an opportunity to access this sale. I will therefore choose not to spend money in their shop, becasue eerything I buy costs more than it should. That is my decision, yes, and I think it's useful that the people that put me in a position where I needed to make that decition are aware. And in all honestly, it's not a difficult decision. Nobody in their right mind is going to pay 20% too much for everything.

I can go and list all the flash gift card sales and their conditions and durations if you like, although I have better things to do right now. I have been waiting for a while for a 20% gift card sale. This is just really frustrating.

It was not overly friendly to the eastern United States either where it ran from 10PM to 2AM EDT. A lot of people (me included) are in bed by 10PM. As it happened I had to get up for a few minutes in the middle of the night and did a quick check of the DAZ store. So, I was able to take advantage of the sale.

Agreed, but I have gotten used to these types of complaint posts, I wish they would stop instead of the flash sales If it nakes the OP feel better I missed out on it as well

I'm really not sure how to respond to this, but I am not going to stop raising these problems. I am sorry if it upsets you that I do so, but given I have had some success with getting stuff changed, why would I stop?

I suspect you are not as upset as the people in Europe that had no fair chance to access this sale and will now have to choose between buying nothing or paying too much. I have missed gift card sales in the past, but where it's my "fault", that's different.

And other people missing out on things does not make me feel better, that's not how I work. I am sorry you missed the sale, and sorry you didn't like my post..

Not great either, no. It's all a bit silly really. Flash sales in the past influenced your spending for a few hours. This one potentially influsences spending for weeks. It will be intresting to see what happens next.

I see your posts here a lot about flash sales for different time zones and I've noticed that Daz is trying to space things out. I'm in CST in the States and when I get up in the morning, I'm seeing more and moreemail alerts for flash sales that started at like 4 or 5am my time, many times I miss those and that's okay, but that's at least noon in Europe so there is a balance happening. The only way that they are going to be able to get the exact flash sales for everybody is to have them repeat every twelve hours the exact same flash sales. I don't know why they don't do that, but without actually changing it that way, they're not going to please everyone but I am seeing they're trying to include everybody more.

    Agreed.

Buy in tends to remove the value of a gift card.

Daz have managed to kill my Daz habit, so a thank you there.

... I'm just spending elsewhere, although not as much as I used to.

I 100% agree with all this, I think they are definitely spacing things out more, and I also think the 12 hour repeat (which they did a couple of times) has to be the best approach. But I don''t mind missing out on flash sales if things feel well balanced.

This was intended as feedback for them, and I also raised it as a ticket (it didn't need a response). I just wanted to point out that people that know they missed this because it was in the middle of the night are unlikely to be very charitable when have no store credit, until such time as there is an equivalent sale they can access. I was hoping we'd see an accessible gift card sale today, maybe at 3 PM, 12 hours later. That didn't happen...

I don't mind the item buy in. I can usually find new PC+ releases I have a use for.
