Rendeirng stopping consistently at 40% convergence on dark, shadowy subjects.
My apologies if this question has been resolved elsewhere but I was not able to find any such reference.
I am using Daz on an IMac with a basic graphics card (Radeon Pro 555X 2GB) so my renders use only the CPU. I have been experimenting with lighting and shadows to produce interesting, artistic renders but have discovered, after trial and error, that the darker the background and the more shadows I have from my lights, the render will stop at about 40% with a repeated "Thin Left Hi.exr..." render message in the display. If I have no shadows and the light is bright full on the subject, it renders fine but of course, at the loss of all the artistic effects. All the render settings are normal and it is not constrained by sampling, time nor convergence. I am assuming that my problem is the lack of a good graphics card but am keen on any opinions from the experts out there.
Many thanks.

Convergence will fail in many occasions just don't consider it. This doesn't mean the final quality is not good.
Thank you.
The problem is that the final quality is far from good.
Can you post an example image?
The default render settings are meant for very bright outdoor scenes, if you are doing dim indoor scenes, set the "cm^2Factor" to 10 to start with, ISO to 400 and adjust your lights accordingly (divide by 100)
DS could also have a problem with the exr image file, find it and convert it to PNG.
Or use a denoiser.
