looking to replace my GTS250 1GB DDR 3 (ASUS P6T original mobo pcie 2.0)
with GXT960 4GB DDR5 pcie 3.0
I have a corsair 750W PSU

I like Asus and would want to keep it ASUS if possible

is this a decent card for Iray and would it be an improvement (scratch that - my gts crashes when I try) - will it work is what I'm asking?

Yeah, it should work...basically anything 7xx and up will be a big improvement (especially 4 GB and up).

It's superior to my gtx 750 ti (an Asus too). You shouldn't have any problem. I run quickly up to the 2GB VRAM limit. You'll be able to render bigger scenes than I can. Personnal choice : I think my next card will have 8GB to be sure that I won't run into memory limitation again

Scored my an Asus G751JY-DH73 last week loving it faster then my 32G beast of a tower good thing is if Iray takes I can always swap out the card in the tower since it runs cooler. Having said that I have gotten a good workflow / results with Reality lux I am also exited to see what will lux 5.1 Reality 4.1 will be like..

I tend to use multiple figures and sets, I hope 4 is enough, 8 is not an option at this time.

Now I need to go scavenge threads for good iray settings.. There should be a sticky with the best settings now that it is officially released... I gather one uses the surface option as we did with 3DL?

I think Mec4D stated somewhere in the Iray render thread that with her 2GB card she could just have two full clothed and haired G2
You can eventually try to reduce textures to get some space but I personally feel that even 4GB can be quickly filled

Iray basically uses 3 bytes per pixel for image files...so yes, with very large texture files you can quickly eat up way more memory than with geometry.

I have not had any issues with a single figure and some props on my laptop with nVidia 680M with 2 gig. I haven't tried more than that.

Did upgrade a PC with a nVidia 980 with 4GB. Renders can be 4-5 times faster. In this game get as big (or high end) as you can afford.

    Cheers!
