Official Release of DAZ 4.8?

I'm guessing this is the official release of DAZ|Studio 4.8. I do have some questions:

1. Can I keep DS 4.7 on my HD? Can I use either 4.7 or 4.8?

2. I have a Mac Pro with AMD FirePro Graphics Cards, so I don't think I can use the GPU rendering. Will IRay work with CPU rendering?

3.If IRay works with CPU rendering, does it take much longer? I have a 12-core 2.7 GHz Intel Mac. Would IRay CPU rendering be pretty fast with that?

4.I see all these new IRay lights being sold, and IRay presets for M6, V6, etc. Do I have to buy some of these products to even try IRay in DS 4.8? Can I try the IRay effect first, with what's contained in DS 4.8? That way, I could see about the speed, and whether or not I wanted to go with IRay.

    1. No. This is an official 'main' update. Can't have two of the main version installed at the same time (unless it's 32 bit and 64 bit...and Iray is only in the 64 bit version).

    2. No you can't use GPU rendering, but yes, you can do CPU rendering with no problem.

    3. If you are happy with the speed of 3Delight on your current system, then that's about what you can expect for Iray, too.

    4. No, all those items are pretty much just presets. All the needed shaders are included...along with a bunch of presets, already, in 4.8.

In the interest of keeping information where people can find it, we're pointing people to this thread which takes you to threads where you can get more information and ask questions.

Is it possible to go back to my previous version. I believe it was 4.6. Everything worked fine.
With 4.8, selection has become cumbersome. It's like going back to first edition of DAZ with a nicer looking interface. However, posing is a problem.

It didn't render. It said it was rendering for almost 10 minutes and it didn't render a single thing. (I had a girl in a dress. No background. No hair.

    NOTHING.

The DSON importer has never worked well for me. However, Exporting the CR2 out of DAZ into a similar program works well with most DUF files.

I want my previous version back.

This is what things look like when you install Studio with a copy up and running.

Make sure studio is shut down and then un-install it.
Then install again - should fix this.

Yes. I have the same question. Sometimes the new version presents big problems, especially the Macintosh versions. I don't want to complain. I'm just asking: If I install 4.8, it seems I have to give up 4.7. In that case, is there a way to return to 4.7 if I want to do that?

In what way? I haven't noticed any change in selection behaviour, but you don't say what you are selecting or where.

Iray render or 3Delight? What were your settings, and what devices were check in the Advanced tab or Render Settings?

I'll take things in reverse order.

Iray or 3Delight? Honestly, I have no idea. I loaded up a Genesis 2 Model. I put a dress on her. I hit Render. Nothing happened. I don't what Iray or 3Delight is except from the promo. I'll look it up when I finish this post. I need no defense in saying a lot of people do this as well. Let's load it up and fire it up and see what happens.

The posing seemed to be difficult as well. When I first tried DAZ years ago I got a bunch of red, blue and yellow Circles that now I know represented the various joints and directions. First for a first time user, it was very frustrating. This is how it felt then and now.

Reading this forum, I shut down my machine. Everything. And booted it back up. I gave it the same test. It did render. I expected faster but it seemed to take longer and I cancelled the render after five minutes. This is a subjective non-timed opinion without any of the parameters you mentioned checked or explored. Perhaps this product is geared for a more powerful machine. I like to be fair. I try to be fair. Here are my specs.

    Purchased in 2009
    Dell Inspiron 546
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 Bit)
AMD Athlon II X2 (Dual Core) 215 Processor 2.75Ghz
    4 Gigabytes of Ram
    GPU Ati Radeon HD 3200

I have corresponded with the developer of Reality 3D who appraised my machine and informed me that I was indeed at the lower end of the spectrum. (By the way, like 99 percent of the developers of Poser and DAZ, content and applications, he's a nice guy! Very helpful)

With all due respect, DAZ3D isn't that intuitive. A lot of things have been cleaned up. I can now locate content easily. The parameters to affect models, still not so much. To be fair, Dials (or in this case sliders) is always a better option than trying to do it manually. The issue I had was clicking on the model and getting a surface selected instead of a body part. It seemed easier with 4.6.

Just so you know, I'm not trying to bash. DAZ has the best models out there. They push the edge for our levels. While Genesis 1 and 2 were heart breakers for those of us who purchased so much previous content (Gen 3 and Gen 4) only to find it useless with the new models, You have to keep on improving and trying new technology. The clothing is more realistic than ever. The autofit technology is ahead of your competitor with most clothing though the lack of backward compatibility is disheartening. I do understand why and accept it. Do I wish DAZ would work with worth, say EvilInnocence? Yes, of course.

Okay, that's it. Understand that this is my experience so far. I haven't given up on the software or DAZ.
