Still image renders faster than image series?

I'm working on an animation with 4200 frames. When I'm trying to render in Image Series mode, each frame takes between an hour and a half to two hours. If I use the Still Image mode, it finishes a frame (same iterations) in 45 minutes. Now I fee like I should abandon the Image Series mode and just render off 4200 images one at a time in Still Image mode. Is this normal? Is there a setting I'm missing to speed up the Image Series rendering?

Is it running out of GPU memory and dropping to CPU part way through?
I honestly don't know how to check that on Windows 10
The log file should help, or check task manager part way through - you will need to Show details, then go to the perormance tab, select the GPU on the elft, and chnage one of the graphs to show CUDA or Compute0 as the defaults do not catch Iray activity at all.
ah! It wasn't. I did some searching and found out how to turn it on in Advanced Hardware Settings. That did it! Thank you!
