System issues when rendering with Iray

Hi, I have an i5-4440 3.10 ghz with 8Gb Ram, windows 7 64 bits and Nvidia GeForce GT730 with 2GB and, when rebdering with Iray all the system is collapsed, I can't even move the mouse to cancel the render process that seems to over consum all the resources.

I understand that the complex render engines takes a lot of resources but is this normal? To left useless all the system?

Thanks

Yes, this is more or less normal. You can monitor the card usage by getting GPU-Z and installing it. If your GPU load is at or near 100% then there really aren't any cycles available for trivialities like updating the screen. I have a GT 740 on my system and when the renders start using it even solitaire becomes unplayable.

Ok, so this is a render engine of "look but don't touch" :(

Not really - cpu only renders run at a speed comparable to 3Delight. I'm currently saving my pennies (and any other loose change I can find) for a second video card. I'll leave my monitors on the 740 and just not use it for rendering.

On an Windows OS one can set the Affinity for D/S down a core or 2 if one has enough of them. That helps free up a core or 2 for the OS to work.

When a program is jammed; hitting the ESC key is supposed to can whatever is going on and I did try that once for this program while it was rendering and got stuck and it worked. Did not crash the OS ;-)

We’ve also created a pointer page that shows various threads on Iray that have been very helpful. Rather than start new Iray pages, please check these sources first since it keeps the places to look for information simplified. These are also pages where many Iray users have been discussing Iray topics and so may be much more helpful to you. When there are dozens of threads, one forgets where they saw what and information may be posted that is very helpful but gets missed.
