Why does the preview renderer have no shadows?

Why does the preview renderer have no shadows?  Is that why it is faster than iray?

Also what can I do to make iray renders faster?  is it because I am using an old laptop?

Is the preview mode set to be Interactive? That, unlike Photoreal, is not fully unbiased and allows various cheats - including objects not casting shadows. Draw Settings has the options.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that she's talking about the texture shaded mode.

the preview render is actually whatever is in the viewport including wireframe or bounding box views etc

the only thing it doesn't preview is 3Delight

Filament has shadows if you have lights

Textured view can to an extent with spotlights

I hate that the preview window shows a bright room but the render shows a dark room.  I thought I did a change to make the room brighter but not sure what it did.
