Faster Rendering with Iray

This article suggests that rendering an image at a larger size (more pixels) for a shorter time, then shrinking the image give similar overall image quality, to the degree that a 3 minute render at 4 times the number of pixels gives similar quality to a 20 minute render when reduced to normal size.
I have not tried it yet, and I am always sceptical about things that sound too good to be true.
However if anyone would like to try it, I would certainly be interested in your observations!

I think this is pretty much the case. I don't think anyone has said otherwise about the technique.
I don't think you can quantify the time savings because each render has its own complexities with lighting, surfaces, and content.
If you know what size you want for an end product, then make the render image size larger, and scale it down afterwards. That's about it.
One counterbalancing factor is that larger renders take up/need more memory, so there's that.
