So, is this something new for 4.8 or have I just never noticed that DS can't import *.3ds files?

Ah, I see. Oh well, who needs a 20-year-old industry standard anyway?

3DS is hardly an industry standard just because it's 20 years old, it's 3DMax's open but jacked up format. Most of the models in this format I have tried had parts strewn all over the place and needed a lot of fixing in Blender before I would want to try importing them to Studio.

    Maybe worth a try .....

    "FBX® 2013.3 Converter

Transfer files from one file format to another quickly and easily with the FBX Converter. This utility enables you to convert OBJ, DXF™, DAE, and 3DS files to or from multiple versions of the FBX format. New tools are now available with the FBX Converter 2012.1. You can view FBX animation files in real time with the FBX Viewer, explore and compare FBX file contents with the FBX Explorer, and manage animation takes with the FBX Take Manager."

I've seen this on very few 3DS models over the last 15+ years, but I agree, when it happens, it's a huge problem. I don't think it's the format itself so much as those programs that have 3DS export functionality are not kept up-to-date with regards to the format spec. I've seen models explode in Truespace and Poser, but Bryce handles them just fine, so it has to be an issue of the import/export plugin and version changes between them.

I've also seen models that had completely random vertex welds, which leads me to believe these were not made in Max, merely exported in the 3DS format from some other app.
