First time installation of DAZ 4.8

Having used DAZ 3D for decades I was surprised, and dismayed, that an automatic update completely excluded all other graphics cards apart from NVidia. Such a product bias does you no good.
The second issue, and maybe personal only to me, was that I upgraded an old Macpro to a 2GB AMD R9 which spurred the old thing along like a young-un but only to find the NVidia drivers incompatible and upon launching my first scene (and tested subsequently on others) the program removed all the lights. With no basic render settings I have NO renders to test this updates ability.
Research says it defaults to 3Delight in the absence of an NVidia card which is NOT OK as I wouldn't have invested in REALITY by Marco Paulo which now equally does NOT work as Lux is scanning only one line.
Pretty disgusted really, poor show, unless I'm doing something fundamentally wrong in relying on the auto-install of DAZ3D.

I think you have a couple of misconceptions going on here.
First, the IRAy render engine does render on CPU instead of the video card, if you happen to have a non-nVidea Card, or an nVidea card with less than 4GB.
Second, it doesn't "default" back to 3delight. You have to manually select that in the render settings.
Third, the "blackness" you are experiencing is most likely on your selection of lights. If you use a skydome in Iray, it will block out the light completely.
If you are just using scene lights, you will have to crank up the luminence to make them visible.
If you share your render and light settings, I'd gladly help you making the render work, and make your Iray experience a little less frustrating.
As for Reality, there were other who had problems, which were solved after reinstalling Reality. Maybe your problem with it will bes olved by that as well?
Thanks for getting back so soon! As usual great service record!
Forgive me but I will cogitate and submit myself to a couple of test renders etc before giving a considered reply. May be a day or two.

*chuckles*
Enjoy. :-)
BTW, when you render and use distant lights, tune them down to 10-15 units in lumiance. All other lights can get cranked up to 45.000 to have good results.
(Just because - using one point light in a cellar on some unsuspecting moster. This is set to "Scene only" in the render settings. :-))
