I got a Reserve Windows 10 Free Offer

I just got an icon on my Windows 7 machine to reserve a free copy of Windows 10.
Looks like the offer of a free Windows 10 is true, anyone here been playing with this version of Windows? If so, what has been your experience as compared to Windows 7/8?
How compatible is it with software such as Carrara 8?
I wonder how good it will be with older hardware like Printers. I have a Lexmark that hasn't died in over 8 years.

I have the same thing on my 8.1. I was going to work some beta testing awhile back but things got too hectic. Windows 7 and 8.1 both have pretty good virtual machines - I wonder if we can do a test run that way. I'll have to do some research.

I'm running Daz on 64 bit windows 10. So far it's 1000x better than windows 8.1. They've addressed all the irritating user interface issues. This is however still the beta, so there are some annoying bugs that I hope get sorted out before release. Daz seems to work perfectly, but photoshop cs2 has some strange issues with the image disappearing everytime you click on a new tool, or layer and you then have to click somewhere to get the image back. It also wont allow you to switch to other programs- you have to first minimize photoshop. So there are definitely some annoying bugs, but they have been whittled away over the last few months.
Overall I would definitely recommend the upgrade, so long as there aren't any gotchas, such as forced subscriptions or whatever.
The update behind this notification is KB3035583, which will be responsible for the actual Windows 10 upgrade process. KB3035583 was released in March, as an Optional update, but MS switched it to Recommended (meaning you will automatically receive it if updates are set to Automatic..
I always set my updates to manual. I decide what I want and when I want to update. No nasty surprise for me. ;-) I hope.
Same here. I hated my Xbox 360 for the forced updates alone. A 36-hour marathon of Dead Rising's Infinite Mode shot to bloody-hjell just because they changed one little thing that had nothing whatsoever to do with how a game communicates with a leaderboard.
But yeah, my Win7 workstation and my Win8 laptop both got the same offer. Hmmm, get the free buggy version of Faildohs 10 or wait and pick it up for $150 when it's fixed? I wonder if I could charge them a license fee for being their guinea pig?
The issues with Photoslop sound like an issue that Adobe needs to address more than Microsloth. Adobe has to adopt the new API. Look for a half-point patch soon, they love those.
Right now I'm courting disaster by continuing to use Paint Shop Pro 9 on Win7 and Win8 x64. It's still the same old PSP to me so far, but I worry with each OS "upgrade" that they'll eventually squash it. I wasted money on the Corel PSPX2 "upgrade" some years ago, so it just sits there eating up drive space. I was going to bite the bullet and buy Photoshop a while back, but they've gone to the subscription-only scam for everything, so that's not going to happen. I'm also still using Adobe Audition 3 and Premiere Elements 7, and fully intend to for a long time to come.
To be honest, Windows 10 needs to be able to run all previous-version softwares natively and be as bullet-proof and reliable as NT 4 Workstation SP3 was. Haven't been able to use Infini-D and Painter3D since leaving NT4, and FloorPlan3D v6 won't even run in Vista in Compatibility Mode. I miss those programs, and M$ has not coughed up the money for their replacements.
And what, pray tell, was wrong with Win 8's interface? 5 minutes with a smartphone and you're a master at Windows 8. Then again, I guess if you don't have a smartphone, I could see where it would be a problem. Still, you got Netflix? No difference IMO. At least you can disable UAC and take total ownership of your computer without everything having to be approved by committee. The one error I loved to get was the "you need administrative access to do this" when I WAS the administrator. Stupid Windows.
This is the first thing I do with a new install of Windows 7. I haven't had an issue with viruses or malware even though this is turned off. I just have a much better experience overall without the constant hassle. It's nirvana. :)
I read an article that said unless you buy windows 10 pro, it will automatically update, and you won't be able to change that. But rumors are flying at the moment, so I'm hoping that they aren't that stupid

Yeah I used it on a laptop and it was absolutely terrible, it just seemed to get in the way all the time. An OS should be invisible. It should get out the way and allow you to do what you need to do, but windows 8 was in your face. From the over simplified metro interface, or whatever they eventually called it, to not being able to close those apps and then switching to them everytime you touched your trackpad, it irritated me so much I uninstalled and installed Deepin instead. Ironically Photoshop cs2 runs better in the wine windows emulator than in windows 10. Go figure.
I got this too, does anyone know if it's possible to revert back to W7 if I don't like W10? I like the idea of a free upgrade, but I wanna be able to go back if I hate it.
That issue with Photoshop CS2 doesn't sound good. I got it when they gave it away and the updater doesn't work, whether or not that was disabled as part of the give-away I can't quite remember. Is there not a way of running it in compatibility mode? I remember that my copy of Vue 10 didn't work in W8, but, I could run it in compatibility mode for W7.
We'll see what happens with the release version

hmmm, interesting thought. I'll try it later and let you know.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. You're right, it is annoying that apps like Reader and even Mail take over your display with no Close, Resize, or Minimize button. Alt+Tabbing out of them left them open, and in some cases left a huge memhog running. I did get used to hitting Alt+F4 to shut them down, though I should not have to.
I think Win8 was designed for people who don't do anything on their computer except surf and email, honestly, and that's how it should've been marketed: "turn your desktop PC into a 12 lb smartphone".
But then I hated Win7 when I first tried it, and to some extent still do - you don't have the "Up one level" button in Explorer, just "back to the folder you just came from".
But once you accept Alt+F4 as part of your normal motions, Win8 gets less annoying.

The annoying thing I found with CS2 was that the DS Bridge didn't work with it, that only goes back as far as CS3. Had CS2 not been free I'd still be using Photoshop 7 or may have moved onto something else. Pay versions of Photoshop are SO expensive.

Two ways right off; do you have your original install disks? Alternatively, an imaging program like Acronis will allow you to make an image of your system as it is to an external hard drive then re-install it back at any time. I recommend the second as a re-install is a long process usually.
This question brings up a good point. I would recommend anyone considering upgrading to W10 to make an image of their system if they don't have one as we really don't know what is happening with 10 yet.
You could always create a partition on your hard drive and install the windows 10 preview just to test it out. I'm currently booting between Deepin, XP and windows 10.
An easier alternative is to install virtual box and run it as a virtual machine from inside windows 7. The performance wont be great with daz, but it will give you an idea of what you're getting into.

I use Macrium Reflect Free for that myself. It does what I need and it allows me to mount the images as though they were drives, very convenient at times when I need to get something from like an old image I no longer keep a live partition for.
So I tested it in windows 7 and windows xp compatibility and they're just as bad. I paid a little more attention, and the image doesn't disappear consistently- I'm not sure what causes it, but it does it pretty often, and when I ran it in xp compatibility it ran a little worse.

I don't really know what to suggest as it's always been fine for me wherever I've used it.
