How Big A Device Do I Need?

I don't think this is an entirely serious post, but I am curious about just exactly what it is they want from me here!

DAZ has always had it's share of quirks, but isn't a desktop computer with a 1280 pixel wide resolution big enough for the entire web?

Went to log into my account and got the extremely silly error message shown in the screenshot.

I did have to unblock googleapis for the product list to work, but the error message remained - I could take another screenshot with items showing and the error message still there to prove it if this is a site error and anybody thinks it would help, but I was just curious why even with scripts from the hated and evil google empire unblocked it still insists on giving such a message.

Maybe I should have put this in the complaint thread...

Maybe it thought you were browsing with a tablet or phone?

Maybe you could file a support ticket, to see if DAZ 3D has any idea what this means. What Browser are you using?

Edited to add that this is apparently a message that you can get when using an iPAd or Kindle or something similar, when the screen res is not sufficient to shw the format

Do you have the window open full screen or only partial screen? If only partial then it means you need to widen your window just a bit more and the warning will go away (or open full screen) I get it all the time when I have more than one window open and that is what I have to do to fix it :)

Everything in Geek is spelled correctly by definition.

I had it full screen, that's why the screenshot is 1280 pixels wide, but the message persisted.

I thought it was related to my noscript tool (used on Firefox, to answer Chohole) but I allowed all the sites it wanted to no avail.

I'm not really concerned, just thought it was silly and wondered if anybody else take the "larger device" phrase like I did! Thanks Newc for confirming that I am not the only twisted mind on here.

And here I thought they were just using "L33t Speak" and spelling "Dazed" with a 3 for the "e" :-)

Hmm my screen res is at 1920 Width I believe and I dont get it. Id be curious to see if you went up one in width (if you can) if it goes away. May be worth putting in a support ticket though as previously suggested as the site (to be mobile ready) shouldn't really be locked in at a certain minimum width I don't think...

I thought you could only get messages on the size of men's devices in the pro bundles.

My laptop may be 1920 x 1080. I know it's bigger than my desktop device - I'll see if I can get it online without rewiring my system (no wireless stuff in my house at all so would need to dig under the mess to get to the connections). I do know that coding for a "responsive" site (same code for mobile and regular) is tricky. Just got a commission for such a site, but the last time I built a site from scratch - css didn't even exist! I have a lot to catch up on...

It's moments like these that I really HATES the terms of service here - every response I could think of is unacceptable :bug:

Let's just say ... The device in my lap gets bigger than the one on my desk. But it sometimes needs a little coaxing. I never tried bundling it to see if I get more ... information. Sounds kinky!

I get that message on my phone, but I can still choose a product from the list and it loads fine.

It's more of a warning than a locked gate.

I've never seen that message before, so apparently the size of my device has always pleased DAZ.

Isn't everything supposed to be "mobile-friendly" now? The evil google issued a dictat a few weeks back telling us we were all obsolete if we weren't, and no one would ever find us again . . .

I think you've invented a new clothing category for the store--bundling-wear!

The issue you are seeing is that the site doesn't operate on pixels, it operates based on font metrics.

If you adjust your font scaling (typically Ctrl and + or -) you should be unlocked from that screen. I'll add that item to the todo however to fix later so we can get some more of the product library working on smaller screens.

"This site does not work on pixels" ... sounds like a quotable quote ;-)

Thanks for the reply, but ...

    Frankly...

That is poor design. I always zoom the text on every site I view! Look at the screenshot I posted, it has text at 133% (it's in the menu bar between the zoom in (+) and zoom out (-) buttons. I sit well back from my monitor - often halfway across the room (my mommy says sitting too close is bad for my eyes), and as such - text needs to be zoomed.

I use an HDTV for a monitor (yes, they call 1280 pixels HD), so the distance is normal for a 40 something inch screen, despite being a person who never watches TV. What can I say? It was cheaper by far than a typical flat screen monitor!

As I said in the 1st post, I don't care about the error message, I was just amused. Now that I see the designers of the site want to tell me at what size I should view their site, I think far less of them and their skills. A site should never try to dictate font, font sizes, or anything that a user may customize for their own ease of access. It's just - as I said - poor design.

But this *is* DAZ, so I have very low expectations for the forums. Fortunately they save their best work for Carrara, even if they refuse to promote it properly, so I give them a lot of leeway :-P

Ah the TV that explains it
while a TV works as a monitor you do need a nice high def one with a good response time.
Yours is the same resolution as my 7" tablet
for a 40" screen that is not a lot of pixels.

Actually, fonts get so small on a 1920 monitor, like my laptop, that I still need to zoom text to the same level or more!

I blame html and the direction it took. When I was designing a lot of websites everybody was all raving about this new thing called a "

tag which they all loved but I still swore by tables because they did Not go wonky and cause total distortion when zooming text. But was invariably met with the reply that they wanted to design a site to have specific sized fonts and such.

I still say that is bad design. Each viewer will have different ways and sites should be flexible.

The mobile market made things different, but I still swear by making certain text zooming is not going to break anything when making a site. And this all started when I had a 30 inch 2,000-something pixel monitor! I could not afford to replace it when it died, so I got this 1280 TV. So it really is site design and not the shortcomings of a 1280 resolution device. Remember the complaints about Carrara and reading the interface when higher resolution monitors came out? It's that same sort of thing.

The HDTV at 1280 pixels works just fine and most sites don't have issues with text zooming, just a select few which I insist on taking to task. I'll make the world work to my standards one of these days!! :snake:

Speaking of making the world work to my standards one of these days ... Where is The Millennium Cow???!!??
