Not sure if you are aware of this ... it was missed in a tutorial and I thought I would share, since you guys have really helped me get started with DS4.8. When using iray and mesh lights of course the preview scene shows NO lights. Here is a trick I learned from Poser's object based lights and the same issue. Take a regular light, spot, infinite preferable ... go into properties and make both diffuse and specccular black. Don't turn them off. (also make sure they don't have shadows on) They will still show up in preview but won't render. It's a great time saver.

You can also hit CTRL+L to turn off the preview light sim, and it will stop being dark.

You can also turn the light preview off, using just the "headlamp" attached to the camera - the shorcut should be cmd(Mac)/ctrl(Win)-l, but it's also in the Window menu. Conversely, if you get the headlamp when you don't want it (because there are no light objects but only mesh lights, for example) as long as you are using an actual camera instead of Perspective View you can turn the headlamp off in the parameters pane with the camera selected.
