does overclocking graphic card can help render in dazstudio ?

Hello,

is it useful for me to tweak/overclock my graphic card to gain smoothness in Iray mode in dazstudio ?

Or is it only cuda powered ... and in this case, I can't do anything about it

Thanks

Yes, it's worth trying. Overclocking applies to the CUDA cores too.

It will have some affect on speed.

It will also have some affect, and perhaps disproportionately, on heat, and energy useage.

I'm more likely to underclock my 3090.

Thanks for your feedback about this.

I tried to overclock and it was like maybe 5% faster (at best maybe 10%).
I still don't know which is best in the optimized render settings to benefit the overclock : memory or speed ... but I have to choose "speed" because there is a weird bug with hairs on some figures (the hair kind of pass thru the forehead ...).

There is more heat after the overclock but my temperature (60°C) with full fan rotation on the graphic card should be OK.
If I want to overclock more, I will have to play with the voltage ...
Now I know that it can helps daz3D to overclock the card, I will try to go a little further by tweaking the voltage and squeeze more power from it.

Are you trying to speed up the actual Iray Rendering or get something happening faster in Iray Preview ?

Kind of both, but I would prefer faster Iray Preview

What kind of system do you have, CPU, amount of RAM, GPU?

Overclocking CPUs and GPUs will increase performace at the expense of higher power draw/more heat generated, and decreased system stability.  Higher power draw/more heat can decrease component life.  If you want to overclock, make sure that your power supply and system cooling can meet the power/heat demand.

I do not think overclocking is worth the effort, but you may feel differently.

For my configuration, it's all there : https://valid.x86.fr/d9duyc

I your problem is to smooth preview, this is not worth the effort. A significant part of the time is to transfert data from memory to vram and the gain will be unnoticeable. If you want to accelerate renders, the gain will be larger, but probably not more than maybe ~10%.

Only thing I really do is undervolt my cards and CPU a tiny bit these days. Less power = less heat = less autothrottling

@alainmerigot : I see, my best bet would be to get an GDDR6X vram video card and get a hand on very fast Computer RAM (fast DDR4 or DDR5)

And yes, after OC, I see a little improvement in rendering phase compared to iray preview.

@RL_Media : you are right, throttling is the worst ! I have an open computer case (actually, I broked the side glass panel ...) ; I do have like 8 or 10 FAN on it lol. I monitor from time to time the temperature of both CPU & GPU, it seems to be ok for me.

The number of fans is not important; more is NOT better, although it can be to a point.

What is better is balancing, after deciding if you want negative or postitive static pressure (both have benefits and there are advocates for both - Google is not your friend, but good enough.)

I have two fans, and I keep it easily cool enough - and noise is low - very low when not rendering; if i'm rendering, then I take a side panel off.

@nicstt : thanks for the explanation. I googled the static pressure, you are right, I wasn't aware of that.
As I bought my actual machine from a local store that build custom PCs, I have faith that they have already tackle the airflow right (balanced).

Oh yeah ? you take off the side panel too ;)
Mine is constantly open ... it's not that I have a choice lol (glass side panel broked while cleaning it, my fault).

For the noise part, I usually put at max the 3 fans that are on the graphic card whenever I use daz3D, I have my tower on the floor for that matter (yeah dusty ! :/)
CPU AIO Fans are always at max too ... anyway, I listen to music while doing stuff on my computer ^^
