Dforce strand hair and fibermesh slowing my scenes and renders to a crawl.

Some hairs in particular seem to extremely slow down my renders and the application in general. I've narrowed it down to 2 specific hairs, which once removed speeds things up.
Particularly "Timothee" hair and "Paul" hair. Unfortunately I have established characters who use these hair models so I need it for many scenes.
Is there some way to fix or bake these hair sets so speed them up and remove the extra features which cause the problem?
I have tried removing the Dforce modifier and it completey messes up the hair, making them transperant and strange looking.
Maybe exporting them as OBJ and reimporting them... not sure. Suggestions?

Have you tried reducing the Tessalation settings?
I did try that, in the case of Timothee hair the tesselation was only at three. Reducing it to 2 doesn't seem to improve performance and 1 makes it look funky.
