I just love Mercury Retrograde. My computer wont start

Yup. I think it may be the power supply. There is zero activity. No lights or anything. Usually when I've had issues similar there were indicator lights of some sort telling me there was life just no starting up. This situation indicates to me that it must be the main power supply. It's dead cold. It's not the UPS as I've got my monitors and other perferals plugged there and their indicator lights are on.
Any other suggestions I can check just in case?
I'm on my tablet. At least I have this to reach out with.
Thanks folks

stupid question but you did try unplugging the power cable from the power supply, then plugging it back in?
Yup. Had a faulty UPS that works sometimes so I I hooked up the rig to that just to test but the ups was in its "I'm not functioning right now" mode so couldn't test that. Even plugged it into the wall outlet directly (which in my book is a bi no no ). Nada.
Put in a new battery, had an extra in my "treasure chest" of extras..... (it's literally in a treasure chest I got from Cost Plus years back, very pretty and big) so after a couple of hiccups the computer started up. I'm still going to touch base with CyberPower about this. I'm on hold right now but need to give them the run down and get some feedback.
Thanks for taking the time Rareth!
Are you on a laptop or desktop? I'm confused, which battery did you replace? The one in an UPS or one in a laptop, or the "clock" battery on the motherboard? What other battery is there?
If you're on a desktop, double check the connection from the power button to the motherboard. If possible verify that the power button itself is reliable by disconnecting from the motherboard, and continuity checking the button via the connector.
Did all that... the battery on the motherboard is what I replaced. Spoke with CyberPower and they agreed that something as small as this little battery can make a computer appear to be DOA... We talked a bit about SSD drives. Made me feel more at ease about finding one that would be suitable for my needs. Said that the rewrite ability is like 40 years or so, no worries there but the 1 Tb is going for about $400.00 ... told him I'd wait for Windows 10 to hit before deciding on that for sure.... Just spent over $300.00 on a new vid card to do better iRay renders with....
I had one machine that was really odd...I had to swap between two power cords when it started acting up, like that. (I flipped back and forth between the cord to my monitor and the original power cord that came with the power supply...my monitor never had a problem with that cord.)
But, yeah, that motherboard battery can cause all sorts of problems. Usually when I do a build, I replace it, with a fresh one, there's no telling how long it sat around on a shelf before it was put in or how long the motherboard sat on a shelf before it was shipped. Supposedly they have a 3 yr shelf life...but that is under optimal storage conditions. They last longer when the machine is actually used...without being plugged in/turned on regularly, they can die in as little as 3 months (it's the only power for the clock when it's not plugged in).
Yup, in all the years that I worked on other people's computers I only ever found two that had dead "clock" batteries on the motherboard. One just complained that the clock was incorrect. The other just sat there like a dead stone until I thought to replace the "clock" battery, then ta-da, all is well except that the clock was wrong and had to be reset. Many of the machines I worked on were 10+ years old and went to the bone yard with their motherboard battery still working.
Oh, and I'm quite sure that Mercury in retrograde does not affect Earthbound computers. There's probably a government funded study that confirms that. If not, I should see if I could get one. That sort of experimentation could run on for years and I need the money.
Congrats on the new card! Glad computer is working and even happier to hear that cyberpower CS was cool. My new machine is a CP.
You think you're having it bad? My Venus & Jupiter are in Gemini Vth House! I'm a Sun & Mercury Leo! My energy is sh**t all week! :shut:

Interesting. Well this extra CMOS battery was in a package with the sticker over it's face to protect it.. had to have it sitting there for years, works fine.

HAHAHAHA Touche'! lol

They are a great outfit for sure. I've never had a rude experience except for one time years and years ago but not an issue since.
Got the new card today. Saw the package sitting on my station when I got into work (hell yea, I had that puppy delivered to my work place, no way did I want to take a chance of it disappearing from my doorstep at the apt). Won't install it till tomorrow. I'm kinda nervous! lol
In case anyone's interested in what I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487120
Total steal!
Hurrumph, starsign followers
I saw title and thought Mercury Retrograde was a brand of computer :red:
Yes but your ascendant must have some influence there too!
Oh yes, the newest computer that actually reads, writes and runs backwards! ;-)~
Very nice! Your going to be rocking and rolling tomorrow night!
Very nice! Your going to be rocking and rolling tomorrow night!
Hopefully tomorrow morning. If I don't get up and just turn on the computer I mean! lol Habits.. and once it's on I get on with it... BUT if I can get up and SEE the card on my desktop perhaps I'll pull on the glasses, turn on all the lights and open up the case and get to it... I have the newest NVIDIA drivers so perhaps this card will just plug in to those and get on with it...
Be sure your sitting down the first time you start a render because your going to be stunned how fast your Iray renders are going to be.

You mean my Aquarius AC? That little bastard screws me over far more during February (courtesy of the Sun Detriment). :)
Not just yet, I got it installed but couldn't find the extra power inputs so I went ahead and powered up and sure enough the message was "please plug in the power inputs" but I don't see them on the card. On the other side it looks like there are a couple of flat bits but I don't think I have anything in my rig that would make use of them in the way of power. Here's a screen grab of what I THINK might be the power port but again I have nothing on this rig to support that.....
HELP!
Wow... I took a stupid pill this AM... I found them but there are the two as you expect, side by side but one is a 6 pin and one is an 8 pin input... Typical square design. How the hell did I not see those. I tuned that card around 10 times ..... right in front on my nose.... LORDY
Better it be user error than "why do I not have all the parts" . Especially on Sunday morning. Truth is I'd have no hope of installing one by myself at this point. It has just been too long since I fiddled with any of that stuff.
Took me a while to figure out but apparently I'm not as estúpido as I thought I was.. The little 6 pin power connectors had some two pinned ones tied down out of the way. Once I shown a good light and got a small pair of scissors out to free them up, I put the two pinner at the end, last block, lined up with it's mate and crossed my fingers. Up it came. Of course NVIDIA had to install drivers so I had the usual LARGE everything. Two monitors with a very full desktop so you can imagine the mess. I am noticing the over all viewing experience is a bit smaller so more room. I guess I need to go into the settings and fiddle around a bit more. Here are it's specs as reported by NVIDIA panel:
Operating System: Windows 8.1, 64-bit
DirectX version: 11.0
GPU processor: GeForce GTX 780
Driver version: 353.06
Direct3D API version: 11.2

Memory bandwidth: 288.38 GB/s
Total available graphics memory: 14249 MB
Dedicated video memory: 6144 MB GDDR5
System video memory: 0 MB
Shared system memory: 8105 MB
Video BIOS version: 80.80.45.00.80

Hmmm, got some settings either in the BIOS I need to tweak or ... I don't know. If I click the Restart button it hangs and if I shut down and reboot is goes into the BIOS, if I just go to the Save and Exit then it boots fine. I don't want to have to do this all the time... that will get annoying quickly! Things seem faster and stable once into Windows....
Suggestions?
Some motherboards have an onboard graphics chip and display connector that is used by default if no other graphics capability is recognized. Some motherboards permit using the on-board chip AND a graphics board. Some motherboards automatically disable the onboard chip if a graphics board is installed. There is usually a BIOS setting to specify desired graphics devices to be used and disable the onboard graphics chip and it also usually presents you a list of recognized graphic devices that you can use to select one of them for default use.
Or perhaps your old graphics board had been selected as the default but is now missing and the system falls back to the motherboard graphics chip?
But you're probably right. It's probably a BIOS setting that needs to be tweaked.
If desperate you could do research and find out if your computer manufacturer has a BIOS firmware update that might affect how it recognizes modern graphics cards and needs to be installed. Like all firmware updates, caution and preparation is advised!
Until buying my new MSI laptop just this march, I have had nothing but Cyberpower custom-built PCs for something like 14 years. I learned of them through a friend when I complained that retail stores were only selling PCs with integrated vid cards that freaking SHARED their memory with the onboard RAM (sadly many generic retail machines still do this). Most customers either don't care or are too stupid to know the difference, I guess. Anyway, this friend, who is more of a computer nerd than I am (and that is saying something) turned me on to CP. He got online with me and went through the website helping me pick options -- which vid card went with my MB, PSU, etc. This was in 2001, I believe. Then I upgraded again in, I think, 2005... and again in 2011. Each time with CP. Their website has gotten better. Back in 01 you had to calculate PSU needs yourself. Now, they do it for you, and warn you if the PSU that you have selected is not strong enough for the system you are building.
I would have gone with one of their laptops instead of the MSI, except at the time (not sure now), MSI was the *only* one offering the 8 GB variant of the 980M vid card... everyone else including CP only offered the 4 GB variant. For the same price. To me this was a no brainer, especially with MSI's rep.
But if I ever go desktop again, I will probably go back to CP. For instance, I would love to get my hands on one of these puppies... but the laptop set me back enough that it is my only PC for a couple of years now. Then it will be time to upgrade again, I guess.
Yea, I've a feeling that the Mb needs flashing.... I'm trying to find out the model number. It's a Gigabyte Mb... that's all I ever use... Luckily CyberPower likes Gigabytes too!
Yup, Unknown Device Identifier found that my new card is listed as an Unknown device! How do I fix this??
I could not wrap my head around the trinity myself. It just seemed like something cats would want to do odd things to rather than just stand on it.
After hand downloading all the updates for my systems Mb and got those installed the system booted as expected but that weird thing with the older NVIDIA card still showing up in the Unknown Device Identifier is still showing up.... so once I get that gone the system should be pretty solid. YAY! *fingers crossed*
