Anyone create logos?
I have this big project that I'm doing for fun and for a challenge. I started a while back and gave up, now I'm back again. I am creating a school. I was given the name "Riker" and "Racoon" for the school name and mascot. I'm creating teachers, students, coaches, etc as well as uniforms for all kinds of sports. I'd like to be able to do things like talent show, school play (scrooge), holidays, spirit week, gradutation, a year book, school news, id cards, etc. anything really to keep my mind off stress. My content library should get quite the workout. Naturally, i don't have everything nor the money to do so, but I'll do what I can.
The school colors are burgundy red, black, white, and gray. I created a logo which is okay, but it doesn't always translate well when I add them to clothing and such. It looks to me like something just put on the clothing rather being a part of the clothing and theme. Does that make sense? I'd like something pretty snazzy.
I'd like to create everything I can by myself if possible. Although, most stuff isn't possible. I can personalize a basketball uniform, but i can't outright create one yet. Although, I can't find some sports uniforms so I will be delving into this realm.
Any logo gurus out there that can give me some pointers on creating a really good logo? I've googled some raccoon logos and I like some of those. Just trying to get some ideas.

Most sports teams logos I've seen have the animal face looking to the side, not directly front facing. Only notable exception that comes to mind is the University of Texas' Longhorn logo. Though their current logo is minimalistic.
Another thing to take into consideration is the time period of your Rikers Raccoons team. A lot of retro mascot logos look cutesy while the more modern ones are more streamlined or "fierce."
Aw I see what you mean. I didn't notice the side thing before. Maybe what I should do is fine a couple of college stores and see what their merchandise looks like and go from there.
