Removing IK Chains

I'm only assuming thats what they are from the icon.

I've tried deleting them; unparenting and deleting; turning IK OFF & deleting them; Removed the Chain assignments; etc.  

I save, close, then re-open scene and they're still there. I want to remove to test if they're interferring with an export.

I'd look in the docs, but, well, you know that story.

So how ARE these removed?

I just right click & delete but I typically don't open most scenes multiple times. Maybe if you export the scene as a scene subset after you delete the IK chains?
