Is there a trick to make the shadows cast by a distant lite softer?

    The larger the light, the softer the shadows. If it s a point light replace it by a disc/square/sphere/whatever and increase the width until you are happy with the shadows.

    it's only the distant light I was working with is there a way to make those shadows softer for that type of light

    The Daz DistantLight is always a point light, shining from infinite distance, with no option to alter its emitter size. Therefore it always casts extremely hard shadows, this can not be changed.

    ...in 3DL ther was a "Shadow Softness" control .  Unfortunately this doesn't work in Iray photoreal mode.

    You can try working with fill lights, that's how photography works with hard shadows.

    Yes thanks, I'm using multiple point lights, it gets shadow lines sosfter and makes the lighting iray preview look better too.

    Do people like using spot lites or pint lites is the best for filling large areas?
