Depth of Field

I've watched Youtube videos on how to create DOF.

Basically we create a camera.

Then we put our subject between the imaginary box of Focal Distance and F/Stop, which can be setup on Camera Pane. Everything outside this area will be blurred.
But when I tried it, the subject is inside the box, but the background is not blurred.

Is there any other settings I need to be aware off?

What is the background, a model or an HDRI set in Render Settings' Environment group? HDRIs don't have any real depth to blur.

    A model, a classroom.

Does the bluriness also affected by the distance of the background from the subject?

    Does DOF affects render time?

As long as "Depth of Field" is set to "ON" .. and the subject is inside the boxes that are then created .. it should be in focus while things outside of the box being out of foucus .. and yes, the bluriness is affected by it's distance to the focal distance box  .. the further something is from the box (whether on the back or fore ground) .. the more depth of field will be applied

The size of the box also matters, the higher the fStop the longer it takes for objects to get blurry.
