Broadly speaking, an HD character is one that is sculpted at a higher mesh resolution (subD level). HD characters can have finer details and more extreme morphs than characters at base or other lower resolutions.
HD morphs work on the additional vertices created by SubD, smoothing the emsh by inserting extra, virtual geometry.
Hi Richard,
Is there such a thing as HD face morphs that work with, say, Face Controls? I'd really like to have all the benefits of G8.1 but with something that approaches closer to Meta Humans' or Ziva Face Trainer's realism.
The face controls are (mostly) bones, the weight maps are not HD so you can't (for example) get additional wrinkles from a face control that would not appear in the base mesh.
To utilize this HD character we have to increase the subD?
And what is HD add on?
Most HD shapes are made for the default division level (for Iray - this isn't something that needs to be set in 3Delight). Those that need a higher level (4, possibly 5) will generally apply that along with their other settings on load.
An HD add-on would be a character or shape using HD morphs.
So a character with HD add on has two options of using high resolution or not,
while HD characters can only use high res?
Is there a generic HD add on that can be applied to any character?
Sorry, I was not following the initial question - the Name 8.1 HD Add-ons add HD morph details to the base shape, which is not HD (but it does have normal maps made from the same detail, which are good enough for many characters for more distant shots - in many cases you need to be quite close to see the extra relief from the HD, rather than the trompe l'oeil effect of the normal maps which just change the way light falls). Generally, unless you make a change, the figure will use HD - just not with any morphed adjustments to the placement of the vertices due to the SubD algorithm.
HD (and normal) details are generally pretty specific to the shape, though there are HD morphs with limited areas of effect not tied to a specific character (some in the base figure and morph packs)
So
HD Add on: adds detail normal maps to mimic HD to a character
HD character: A character with detail virtual subD geometries
?
No.
Daz Original characters, the ones that are named with a character name and a generation number, like Victoria 8.1, Michael 8.1, Necromancer 8.1, etc. do not come with HD morphs. They come with normal maps to mimic HD details. To get the real HD morphs for a Daz Original character, you have to buy the HD addon for the character. This can become quite expensive, because Daz prices both the character and the HD addon very high.
Characters that are created by other artists and are sold in the Daz store are usually sold as "character name FOR Genesis 8.1 Female" or "character name FOR Genesis 8.1 Male". Sometimes the artists use the HD morph tool to create their characters with an extra level of detail. When they do, they put HD into the character's name. In my experience, sometimes those HD details are as good as Daz original HD addon morphs, sometimes they are inferior, and sometimes they are better. They are almost always a more economical choice.
In any case, to see any benefit from HD morphs of any kind, it is necessary to select a fairly high subdivision level (minimum of 3, often 4, seldom 5) in the Parameters pane.Every level of subdivision quadruples the number of polygons, so you need to be careful to keep your computer specs in mind and not go too high. If you are not rendering a closeup portrait, you might not even be able to see a difference on many characters. I think HD morphs are over hyped in most cases, except for extreme character shapes or extreme closeups.
No, The HD Add on adds a morph - the base character has normal maps that fake the same detail.
with an HD morph - all characters have HD geometry (by default).
Ok.. I think I get it.
The different between the two is, the one where the title blabla.. HD ADD-ON means the specific character and the HD Morph sold separately. While the one sold bla-bla HD means the character and the HD Morph sold as one product.
